About the Gifted Educational Specialist

Dr.Riegel began his teaching career in 1980, after graduating from 
Towson University with a B.S.in Biology. Upon graduation, Dr. Riegel was 
employed as a long-term sub by Baltimore and then Harford Counties. He 
taught 7th-Grade science at Woodlawn Middle School for a year before being 
hired to teach at Patapsco Middle School in 1981. After receiving his 
M.Ed.in Seconday School Administration and Supervision from 
Towson University in 1985, Dr. Riegel transferred to Howard High School 
where he taught biology, chemistry, earth science, A.P.Biology, stagecraft, 
and M.S.T. Research until 1999 when he has named the school's 
Gifted and Talented Resource Teacher. Dr.Riegel has been Chairperson of the 
Site-Based Management Team (which later became the School Improvement Team) 
since its inception in 1986. In 2003, he earned his Doctorate in Educational 
Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. Dr.Riegel holds the following 
certifications: General Science (6-12), Biology (6-12), Principal and 
Supervisor, Administrator I, and Adminnistrator II.

Mission for the Gifted and Talented Research Program

The Mission of the Howard County Public School System's High School Gifted 
& Talented Research Courses is to empower students to contribute to the 
larger community by applying, creating, and evaluating knowledge in a 
specialized area of study.
