Welcome! The Science Department at Howard High School is
dedicated to developing substantive science literacy in all students. Our
courses are designed to provide an effective student-centered approach to
learning that engages students physically and mentally in an inquiry-based
laboratory program. We offer a variety of courses ranging from core courses in
Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, to elective courses like
Marine Science, Forensic Science, and Anatomy and Physiology, as well as 4
challenging AP courses designed to push our students to the achieve their
highest potential.
All students must earn a minimum of 3 science credits to
obtain their high school diploma. One of these three science credits must be
Biology where students must also earn a passing score on the High School
Assessment (HSA) in Biology in order to graduate.
Our department also holds a Science Fair each to showcase
the talents of our science students. Currently (2006-2007 school year) all
students enrolled in Earth Science GT, Biology GT, and Chemistry GT are
required to participate in the science fair. Category winners and runners up
may be invited to participate in the Howard County Science Fair and Baltimore
Regional Science Fair. Please visit the Science Fair page for more information.
For any information or important updates about the
department please visit our News/Updates page, including any handouts or
documents you may be interested in (for example, incoming 9th grade
orientation night information).
