SOCIAL STUDIES FOR GRADES 7 & 8

In the seventh grade, Archdiocesan students study world regions and
cultures. To meet Archdiocesan expectations, I.H.M. has ordered new
(and expensive) textbooks. We will be covering the Eastern Hemisphere.
Grade 8 studies U.S. History from the pre- Civil War era to modern
times.
Besides working from the text students are encouraged to watch the
national news programs and to read news magazines such as U.S. NEWS & WORLD
REPORT. Extra Credit points can be acquired by reading and summarizing
certain articles (with permission). Map work will be provided that teaches
or reinforces map skills needed for high school and college. Students will
also be required to memorize certain maps so that they become familiar with
areas mentioned in the news.
Tests are given at the end of each chapter. Each chapter is divided
into 3-5 lessons or sections. Two days notice will be given, but students
are required to begin reviewing on their own before test is "officially"
announced.
If a student is participating in class, scoring well on quizzes and
completing the written assignments, he/she should do well on chapter tests
with a reasonable amount of extra study.
Vocabulary/identification or section quizzes are announced the day
before and have about 10 questions.
The topics and scope of extra credit projects must be discussed with
the teacher beforehand.
All tests must be signed and returned within two days.
Unsatisfactory quizzes must be signed and returned within two days.

Assignments are given as a culmination of the day’s work or as a
preparation for the next day’s class. It is expected that a student will
complete tasks to the best of his/her ability. READING ASSIGNMENTS ARE TO
BE COMPLETED IN A THOUGHTFUL MANNER.
