Syllabus Fren IIFrench I covered the fundamentals of the French language. Skills included the acquisition of vocabulary; an understanding of verbs and their conjugation in present, simple future and passé composé (compound past); use of adjectives; negatives and interrogatives; definite and indefinite articles; and grammatical structures. French II will strengthen this foundation and work toward putting all of the fundamentals together for comprehension, both oral and written. Comprehension should not be confused with translation. Techniques for comprehension will include recognition of parts of speech; use of cognates and “near” cognates; picking out the roots of words; understanding of verb tenses; use of written and visual context; and reasoning. The thought processes for comprehension and response occur initially in English and the pace is relatively slow. With mastery, the pace will pick up and thought processes will begin to take place in French. Students will expand their verb conjugation skills learned in French I in the passé composé and will add the imparfait (imperfect) tense later in the year. Most importantly they will learn to recognize the root verb when they see a verb in its conjugated form. This is a key to growth in reading skills. More of the course content, both written and oral will be in French than last year, and this will increase throughout the school year. We will also be increasing the focus on pronunciation.
