Physical Education (Grades 3-8)
My philosophy is based upon the belief that physical education is an
essential part of a child’s overall education. Unfortunately, PE Programs
have long been associated with “survival of the fittest” where only a small
percentage of the population, the athlete, achieved success. The other
children were expected to perform at a level above their capabilities which
resulted in repeated failures. As we all know, a lack of success eventually
decreases a child’s interest and confidence. Therefore, I strive to develop
lessons that allow all children to experience some degree of success.
Traditionally, most physical education programs consist of sports units that
stress mastery of skills and competition. In my opinion, this approach leads
to student frustration and overextended units. I agree, sports and
competition are an important component of physical education but I prefer to
use these primarily as a means of attaining fitness. I believe the purpose
of PE is to instill a sense of accomplishment, a positive attitude towards
physical education and a lifelong appreciation of health and fitness.
There are many methods of teaching physical education but one of my
favorites is a method known as "stations". Stations consist of small
groups/teams working on specified goals both independently and
cooperatively. Children rotate from station to station participating in
motivating and challenging activities of varying degrees of difficulty and
intensity. This maximizes participation and ensures that every child is
provided with numerous opportunities for success while skills are introduced
and reinforced.
Implementing the station format approach also creates a non-threatening
environment for children. The focus is solely on numerous opportunities for
improvement (not just performance). This leads to confidence, which
encourages children to try, enjoy and participate in a
lifetime of physical activities and sports.
