January/February
Well, now that the holidays are over those of us who ski are waiting for some snow. In 8th grade science we are moving into a study of atomic structure and the periodic table. This will be the final unit in chemistry that we are going to do. Students will learn about the various models that have been proposed and will also learn the theory behind the periodic table. While they are not memorizing the table they will become very familiar with the vast amount of information that can be derived from it. This unit will include a project in which students create their own periodic table to demonstrate their understanding of how the table was constructed. The next unit we will move into is genetics. In this unit students will learn about the classical theory of genetics, learn how to predict possible offspring from a given mating and, understand more complex hereditary patterns. This unit does have a component that studies both human characteristics such as blood type and one that looks at hereditary diseases such as Huntington's disease. This unit is really a lead-in to the popular CSI - Indian Creek School activity. This is a somewhat stressful and anxious time for the 8th grade as they learn where they will be going to high school. You may find yourselves needing to exercise some additional patience with them. Also - make sure they are eating and sleeping well so that they stay healthy. The play also puts stress on their time and emotions so it is critical that they get appropriate amounts of rest. Hope you all enjoy the winter - and THINK SNOW!!!!
