Little Jeffersonian Program for 2 & younger 3 year old Students

Licensed by The Maryland Child Care Administration

9:15 to 12:15 or 9:15 to 3:15 p.m.

The Little Jeffersonian program is designed to meet the specific developmental needs of the ever inquisitive two year old.  It is our belief that children learn best by doing; therefore the environment is set up to allow maximum participation in classroom life.  During the two-year-old year children develop a new awareness of themselves as separate, unique people and they begin a new quest for independence. Our teachers respond to this need by not rushing to entertain or control the children, but rather quietly give lessons and redirect children who are struggling.  Low shelves house a variety of appealing exercises for the child to explore independently.  These materials offer a variety of choices to encourage decision making by choosing the “work” that calls to the child’s particular sensitive period.

Each day the child experiences group lessons, singing, and movement as well as substantial time for independent, uninterrupted work.  Snack preparation, self toileting, care of the environment, outdoor play, and gross motor activities round out the daily experience.   The classroom becomes a home away from home where children feel secure knowing their physical and emotional needs will be met and they are confident to attempt new and exciting challenges.

The Fine Arts

Music

The musical literacy of the child is accomplished by affording ongoing opportunities to listen, to sing, to compose, to perform, and to appreciate music.  School performances throughout the year provide the young star ample time to reap and relish recognition while gaining the self-confidence of “being on stage”.

Art

Art is a language of visual self-expression.  It is a language of thinking, imagining, experimenting, perceiving, balancing, planning, inventing, and presenting!  Just as the language curriculum encourages oral and written expression, the art department delights in the vitality of its student’s artistic expression. Skills and techniques form the foundation that allows students to broaden their abilities to evaluate, interpret, and appreciate a wide variety of artwork.  With a feeling of confidence, Jefferson students dare to accept the challenge to speak out “artistically”. Stop and listen to “what they have to say” as you pass their exhibits so proudly displayed throughout our hallway galleries.

Foreign Language

Jefferson Montessori takes advantage of the students’ absorbent mind by introducing Spanish as a foreign language experience.  Planned lessons using a variety of props, puppets, music, and games make learning language and fun and natural experience.  Each week during Spanish time is allotted to reinforce past vocabulary words as well as to introduce new concepts.

Physical Education

Our physical education program is comprised of regularly scheduled indoor and outdoor activities.  Our co-educational classes offer a balance of whole group, team, and individual experiences. Emphasis is on the improvement of individual motor performance through participation in fitness activities, games, or activities designed to teach specific skills.  Our new state of the art, regulation size “Sport Court” provides the ideal arena for a wide variety of organized games and sports.
