 Welcome

The Jefferson Schools are committed to striving for the kind of excellence embodied by one of our most versatile leaders, Thomas Jefferson. We are focused on the fundamentals of learning. Our goal is to give each child the best foundation possible in the basic core learning areas. Jefferson is firmly committed to creating a challenging environment that generates intrigue, instills curiosity and fires the excitement of success attained by discovering "how to learn" and "how to achieve".

What makes an education at The Jefferson Montessori School unique?

The "whole child" approach. The primary goal of our program is to help each child reach his or her full potential in all areas of life. Activities promote the development of social skills, emotional growth, and physical coordination as well as cognitive preparation. Our specially trained teachers allow the child to experience the joy of learning, time to appreciate the process, and provide the experiences from which children create their knowledge.

The "Prepared Environment." At Jefferson self-directed learning takes place in our specially prepared classrooms. The whole learning environment, the materials, and social climate-must be supportive of the learner. Our teachers provide necessary resources, including opportunities for children to function in a safe and positive climate. The teacher thus gains the children's trust, which enables them to try new things and build self-confidence

The Montessori materials. At Jefferson our classrooms are equipped with a full array of the specially designed Montessori materials and extension materials. Dr. Montessori's observations of the things which children enjoy and go back to repeatedly led her to design a number of multi-sensory, sequential and self-correcting materials which facilitate the learning of skills and lead to learning of abstract ideas.

The teacher. At Jefferson our Montessori teachers function as the designer of the environment, a resource person, a role model, a demonstrator, a record-keeper and a meticulous observer of each child's behavior and growth.
Extensive training, typically a full year following the baccalaureate degree is required for a full American Montessori Society teaching credential. In addition, Montessori certification requires a year of student teaching with the age group the teacher will become certified to teach.
