FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
How many books are students allowed to check out? Students may check out two books if they are in Grades 1 - 6. Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten may check out one book. Most books have a two week check-out time. Reference materials and magazines can only be checked out overnight. Playaways can be checked out for one week. May students have access to the Media Center during the day? Yes, students may come to the Library Media Center with a pass from their teacher. They can use any available computer, look at a magazine, get a book to read while in the library, or do independent research. During assigned times, children may come to the Library Media Center for an Open Book Check-Out time. If I am not in the LMC, the student will have to come back later. Can the students surf the Internet while in the Media Center? No. "Surfing" is not a tool the elementary students need to employ while at school. For information on particular subjects to meet classroom needs, Mrs. Hansen will bookmark worthwhile sites. "Folders" can be prepared for individual classes to meet particular assignments or curricular needs. Are there suggested sites that will interest Marlton students? Yes, there are many that Marlton's website provides and that individual teacher websites will suggest. These have been checked out by the educated professional and deemed appropriate for students to use while at home or at school. See the "Links" page on this website for some suggested sites. Can my son or daughter work on assigned projects in the Media Center? Yes! :) There are open times in the schedule for teachers to assign students to use the Media Center to work on assignments and to be able to do research. During this time, I am available to assist the student in doing their research with print and non-print materials. The Internet can be used with my assistance. I can then help the student to make a PowerPoint presentation, a pamphlet, a poster, etc. These open times in the schedule allow individual students and/or small groups to come to the Library Media Center to work. What technology is available for a student at Marlton to use? Students can use computers and the accompanying software (PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, etc.), digital cameras, video cameras and stand, AlphaSmarts, LCD projectors, DVD and VCR players, cassette player/recorders, and the Internet with adult supervision. How often do classes visit the Library Media Center? Every class comes once every other week for book check-out and short skill lessons. Literature sharing will also take place at that time. Every class can come as often as needed to work on special skills or assignments by the teacher signing up for extra available time. The classroom teacher can sign up for whole class or small group use of the Library Media Center. How do you get to become Library Media Helpers? A Library Helper is chosen by the classroom teacher and/or Mrs. Hansen. Every classroom will have 2 chosen helpers. The Library Helper will help maintain the Library Media Center by shelving books, preparing computers for classroom use, maintaining the orderliness of the Library Media Center, helping get equipment ready for use, helping provide materials for the students to use, etc. Will the Library Media Center be available when Mrs. Hansen is not available? Yes, a teacher may come in to use the computers, the LCD projector and the visualizer with his/her class. The teacher MUST sign-up on "Hansen's Schedule" on the Yahoo Calendar for a desired time so that no one else comes at the same time. Individual students cannot come into the Library Media Center when I am not there. Are parents allowed to check books out? Special arrangements can be made for parents to check books out for a limited time. How much does a lost library book cost? Most library books are around $25.00. Parents sometimes wish to replace a lost book with a book they purchase to replace it. This will not work because the books have to be ordered and processed (given barcodes and spine labels and then re-entered into our Destiny system). Some reference books and Playaways can cost up to $80. |
