Ms. Moore and Ms. Brundage
Third Grade

Dear Parents,

We are very thankful for the hard working students in our class. We would
like to send many thanks to the parents who coordinated the Halloween party
and donated books to the classroom. We had a fabulous time playing games,
dancing, and listening to Halloween music. Your children have been very busy.

READING:
Ms. Brundage and Ms. Moore’s reading groups are reading their first novel,
The Chocolate Touch. It is a wonderful story that teaches a valuable lesson.
We will continue to use the basal reader and Read Naturally to improve
comprehension, build fluency, and develop vocabulary. Both groups will
continue to focus our lessons on monitoring comprehension and using the fix-
up strategies. Some of the fix-up strategies are rereading, making
predictions, and making connections.

LANGUAGE ARTS:
Our focus in Language Arts has been run-on sentences. The students have
corrected run-on sentences by using capital letters and appropriate end
marks. We have written friendly letters to our students of the month.
Everyone did an exceptional job presenting their mystery book reports. The
students wrote wonderful personal narratives. They enjoyed writing about
something that really happened to them. We have also written paragraphs
about what we like to do in the fall. In keeping with the Thanksgiving
spirit, the students will write what they are thankful for.

MATH:
We have finished Chapter Three (Money), and the students did a magnificent
job on the Chapter Three Assessment. During Math Lab, they enjoyed playing
Allowance and Money Bingo. The students are currently learning about
addition and subtraction with regrouping. It would be beneficial for
students to practice addition and subtraction facts at home to increase
speed and accuracy.

SPELLING:
We have been sorting words with the short and long vowel sounds. It is good
practice to have your child sort the words from their Ziploc bag each night
in addition to the activities in the packet.

BEAR TIME:
The students are using BEAR TIME to read books from our classroom library
and books they have brought from home. We are encouraging the children to
choose chapter books and stick with them until completion. We are also
using BEAR TIME to read aloud to the children. This is our second month
doing the BOOK IT challenge. There was a 100% participation for the month of
October. The children received a pizza coupon for completed logs.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
Students had the opportunity to decide what job they would like to do if
they sailed aboard one of Columbus’s ships. Then they wrote letters to
Christopher Columbus, stating why they think they should be hired to do
their chosen job. Students participated in the voting process by registering
to vote and voting in a mock election. Our next focus will be Colonial Times.

REMINDERS:
•	Please be sure to look over your child’s homework assignments to
make sure everything is complete. Please sign their planner each night.
•	All clothing, jackets, sweatshirts, backpacks, and books brought to
school should be labeled with your child’s name.
•	Children should not bring any toys to school (especially
electronics) unless it is an earned privilege.
