small medium large Students in grades 5 & 6 are graded on four Academic Objectives and five Behavioral Objectives in Music Class. These objectives are averaged quarterly into a single letter grade. The Music Class Academic Objectives are as follows: 1A. Strives to Learn Musical Concepts (Notation of Pitch, Rhythm, Symbols and Vocabulary) This objective is defined through the student’s efforts to learn new musical information. The learning process includes memorization of musical symbols and vocabulary as well as methods of writing note values and pitches. 1B. Strives to Learn New Vocal and Instrumental Music This objective is defined through the student’s efforts to learn new vocal and instrumental music used in music class and for performances. Given repertoire may include solo, small ensemble or large group settings. 2. Exhibits Positive Feelings About Singing and Playing Music This objective is defined through the student’s active participation in vocal and/or instrumental settings in music class and in performances. Some consideration is given to the student’s level of comfort with making music and her/his willingness to sing, play and move to music both in class and on stage. 3. Demonstrated Musicianship Through Performance This objective is defined through the student’s ability to demonstrate an understanding and mastery of repertoire learned in music class and for performance. Considerable attention is given to the student’s attendance and participation in all scheduled concerts during a given marking period. 4. Shows Determination in Completing Written Work and Small Group Projects This objective is defined through the student’s ability to complete given class assignments within a designated time frame. Attention is also given to task completion and willingness to finish small group projects with peers. The Music Class Behavioral Objectives are as follows: 1. Displays Appropriate Class Behavior This objective is defined through the student’s willingness to comply with the established music room rules. These rules are based on the McLean School’s Code of Conduct as well as rules established by students in music class groupings. 2. Participates Fully This objective is defined through the student’s attentive and active participation in all class activities. Some consideration is given to the student’s ability to transition from one class activity to the next. 3. Is Prompt and Prepared for Class This objective is defined through the student’s ability to transition into music class from the previous class period and to display a readiness for the lesson upon entry. 4. Follows Directions and Works Cooperatively This objective is defined through the student’s willingness to follow and comply with given directions. Focus is also placed on the student’s cooperation with the teacher and with other students in class activities and applied music settings. 5. Handles Instruments and Tools With Care This objective is defined through the student’s care and maintenance of all musical instruments and classroom supplies used in music class or performance settings.
