Language Arts incoroprates phonics, reading, and
writing. Kindergarten students receive 1 hour and 40 minutes of Language Arts
instuction each day. Anne Arundel County Public Schools uses The Open Court
curriculum which is aligned with Maryland's Voluntary State Curriculum.
Open Court Language Arts is broken into three parts: Green
Band, Red
Band, and Blue
Band. Green
Band also known as Sounds and Letters consists sounds and letters and
language, phonemic awareness, letter recognition, how the alphabet works, and
phonics. Red
Band also known as Reading and Responding focuses on print awareness,
literature appreciation, and reading and writing connections.
Blue Band also known as writing incoporates journal writing and the main idea
that what we say can be written, and what we write can be read.
Kindergarten students will be introduced to 8 units
this year. Our first unit will be SCHOOL. During this unit students will able
to understand how this theme relates to their own life through stories,
discussions, and writing. Students will have a chance to bring in items for
our concept/question board. An interactive bulletin board where students post
questions about the unit and concepts they already know. Concepts they could
bring in could be a newspaper article on school or book.
Modifications and differentiation will be used to
meet multiple student's needs.
