New Year- New Studio Project

The students did a nice job with their Expressionism Masks. If your child
has not shown you his/hers, ask him/her. Everyone was asked to take their
mask home to show their parents with their grade and then return the mask to
be held for a spring art show.

New Studio Project: Fauvism, Henry Matisse and Cut Paper Collages
The students will be assembling a cut paper collage in the style of Henry
Matisse. Our focus will be on the design elements of color and positive and
negative space as well as the design priniciples of balance and movement.
Students have been given handouts outlining the projects and associated
assignments with due dates. You can see what is due by looking at the
Project Master List or by looking on the Homework section or Calendar
section of this website.

 Studio Project 1: Impressionistic Landscape

We have completed our first studio project. The students produced some very
nice pieces. Everyone gained a new appreciation for the skill of master
painters as they faced various challenges in completing their peice.

Paintings were sent home for parents to see. I have asked that the
paintings be returned on 11/05. The team putting together the development
dinner would like to display some of the paintings. I am excited that the
students have this opportunity for the public to view their work. They have
every reason to be pleased with their accomplishments on this first piece of
the year.

Studio Project 2: Expressionist Mask

We are about to start our second unit and studio piece. A study of
Expressionism will allow us to explore the use of line, shape, color and
texture on the message and mood communicated by an artist.

This is a fun but messy project initially as the students will be casting
one another's faces in plaster. They will then choose colors and textures
with which to embellish the mask to communicate a specific emotion or
expression.

Grading Update November 26, 2007
In order to be as objective and fair as possible in evaluating students for
art, I have made the following modification to the grading system.

Homework:
Each homework assignment will be graded on a 5 point scale.
   1- incomplete
2- something is completed but the assignment does not meet expectations
   3- completed to minimum expectations
   4- completed above expectations
5- completed with extra credit or attention

Class Participation:
Student can earn 3 points each day that we meet for class.
1 point- coming prepared with proper materials (M)
1 point- listening attentively and/or participating in class discussions
(D)
1 point- working productively on studio activities (P)
If a student does not receive all 3 points for a given day I will mark my
grade book witht the letter(s) representing the point(s) the student did not
receive. If a studen does not receive a point in the same area for 3
classes or is not receiving 3 points consistently, I will notify the
parent.

All class and homework assignments are listed on the Project Master List for
each project. If you ever have questions or concerns regarding an
assignment you can email me. Any missed or incomplete assignment may be
handed in any time up until the close of the marking period for partial
credit.
