FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
What is the Gifted and Talented Research Program? The Gifted and Talented Research Program is a class that allows students to explore topics and careers based on their interests and passions. In order to get in the class, a student must submit an application. The application process usually begins in January. Talk to the Gifted and Talented Resource Teacher if you are interested. Where is the Gifted and Talented Resource Room? The Gifted and Talented Resource Room is located in room 402. If you are in the Guidance Office, make a left, a quick right and another left and you are there. How do I get a mentor/advisor? The best mentors are those you may know personally. However, the resource teacher will assist in locating an appropriate mentor/advisor for you when needed. How much time do I spend with my mentor? For each credit you take, you must spend 5 hours a week with your mentor. Can I take the class and participate in extra-curricular activities? Many students participate in extra-curricular activities while in the research program. Intern/Mentor students must complete 5 hours a week per credit. Scheduling time for both is up to the intern and mentor. Remember... this is class. Extra curricular activities should not take priority over your class. What kinds of things can I research? The topics of research are as broad as a student's interest. You will want to focus on discovering new information and creating "new" knowledge. This is authentic scholarly research and will take time. As an intern, it is more beneficial to have transportation. Some mentor sites are within walking distance or accessible to public transportation. Are there contracts to be signed? There are contracts that must be signed. The contract must be signed by the student, mentor, parent, principal, and teacher. All contracts are kept on file. How early can I begin the program? You can begin as early as 10th grade. The Independent Research Class is a great way to begin your research. However, taking the Independent Research class is not a prerequisite for getting involved in the advanced research program. Yes. This class is a G/T offering. It is taught on the level of an advanced placement course. Students will be expected to complete authentic scholarly research on a college level. Is there a research paper or final project? Yes. You will have to complete a research "Knowledge based" paper as well as a final, original project. Both the paper and the project will be reviewed by both the teacher and the mentor/advisor for accuracy and authenticity. |
