Dear Parents, November 9,2009
I can't believe it is already November! We will all be sitting down
to a Thanksgiving feast with our families in a few weeks. We each have so
many things to be thankful for... most of all for our Lord Jesus Christ!!!
We are spending alot of time in second grade developing as good
writers! We are using story maps to organize our ideas, writing rough drafts,
then we are proofreading and revising. Our Room Moms are helping design a
special "Author's Chair" for students to sit in and share their wonderful
writing pieces.I can't wait!
We are currently working on a Narrative Account. Each child is writing
and developing a story about an exciting moment in their life. They are
learning to write using a lead sentence, and supporting details. I am also
teaching the class to use "time order" words in their writing... words
like "first", "then", "next", and "finally".Please praise any attempts at
writing at home, and refer to your child as " an awesome writer"! A good
writer and a good reader go hand-in-hand!
Our reading groups are going very well! We are working on the
following skills in class: accuracy, expression, comprehension, smoothness,
poise, volume, enunciation and speed. Please encourage reading at home and
stress these important skills. Find a subject that captures the interest of
your child and provide reading material on that subject.I like to encourage
second graders to read Chapter Books. It will enhance their vocabulary and
also make them a better writer!
Please continue to practice basic addition and subtraction facts
at home. There are many available web sites to practice your facts, such as
www.aplusmath.com/flashcards. Students need to have these facts memorized!
Instant recall is our goal.
Happy November Birthday to Jacob Ehm on November 16, and Joshua
Blake on November 20! A special thank you to Seth Dawson, Ian Johnston,
Kelsey Ruszczewski, Kristin Agwale, Ethan Clark, Megan Marshall, Toby
Okafor, Taylor Richardson,Justen Winemiller, Rachel Huber, Joshua
Pfeltz,Jacob Ehm,Sierra Garrison, and Simon Thamavong for sending in a box
for Operation Christmas Child! Megan sent in two boxes, and we received
enough donations to make two more boxes from the class!!!
Report cards are issued Wednesday, November 11. Great job, Second
Grade! My motto is "always do your best"!
We will have a Thanksgiving Party on November 24 from 2:00-
3:00.Look for a sign up sheet in the hall. Also, November 24 is "Grandparents
Day"! We are working on special crafts, and a song presentation for the
Chapel. Ask your child to show you the motions!
THANK YOU to Mrs. Winemiller, Mrs. Baxley, and Mrs.Ehm for organizing
our "Christmas Celebrations" class book we are writing. Watch for details
about how you can purchase your own copy!
I am thankful for each one of you, and your prayers and support.
Have a wonderful, Jesus-filled day!
