November Newsletter
Dear First Grade Parents,

I am stunned that it is November already! Your precious children keep me very busyJ. My new grandson was born last Monday. I was able to share pictures with the class on Tuesday. The first quarter ends this Wednesday. Your children are doing such a fabulous job! They make my job a pleasure.  In October, we wrote about the moon for Science. Look for our pictures outside the classroom soon. We learned how to open and save a document in computer. In Science, we also learned about why leaves change colors. In phonics/spelling we practiced ay, sh, th, double consonants, e,o, or y at the end of a word it says it’s long sound. In Social Studies, we learned about maps. We drew maps of the school and our homes. In Bible, we learned about Noah and Abraham and how they obeyed God. In math, we learned about subtraction, money, place value, and shapes. We started reading to the K5 students every Thursday. The students choose a book at their level and the practice reading it with their partner 3 or 4 times. On Thursday, we read our books to the K5. We started our STAR STUDENT last week. Your children wrote a friendly letter to our STAR STUDENT. I’m very proud of their progress!

This month we will learn about gravity and mechanical force in Science.   In Social Studies, we will learn about the early settlers and the First Thanksgiving. In Reading, we will continue to practice our fluency by doing a Readers Theatre (more information to follow). In Phonics/Spelling, we will review sh, th, ou, ow and e, y, o at the end of a word. In Math, we will begin our Farm unit. We will continue to count money. We will begin working on time and learn our addition and subtraction facts through 9. In Bible we will learn about Trusting God and all of the benefits it brings.

Happy Birthday to Seth - November 14.

We had a wet, but memorable field trip to Green Meadows Farm. The students were all very well behaved and had a great time. They will be writing about their trip this week.

Thanks to all the parents that sent in stuff for the party and a special thanks to Ryan’s Mom for planning the party. Thanks also to the Mom’s that were able to stay and help with the party.

Our class is sponsoring a 5-7 year old boy and girl for Operation Christmas Child. Please send in your items by Monday, November 9th.

American Education Week begins November 16th. Please look for the date and times you may sign up to come and see all the great things your child is learning in first grade.

We will have a special Thanksgiving Feast on Tuesday, November 24th. This will also be our celebration for Grandparents Day! If you would like to assist with this event, please contact Jessica Smith via email andyandjess5@verizon.net.

If you need to contact me, please call the school or via email  deborahhopp@aol.com.

In Jesus,

October Newsletter

Dear Parents,

I can’t believe how fast this first month of school has gone by!  I just wanted to give you an update on what is going on in First Grade.  We have mastered most of the classroom routines.  I absolutely adore you precious children!  I am so thankful to be their teacher!  In Math, we are learning addition, subtraction, fact families, and counting money.  In Reading, we are learning about characters in stories, titles, authors, and illustrators.  We are also learning to work in groups at our centers.  In Bible, we learned about the Fruit of the Spirit and Creation.  In Science, we learned about our five senses.  Thanks to Halaina’s mom, Ryan’s mom, and Anthony O’s sisters for their help with the centers.  In Phonics, we are learning about blending words with a consonant and a short vowel.   In Spelling, we have completed list 4.  We have learned the following rules: Single vowels in a word have a short vowel sound; Two vowels in a word –the first vowel says its name and the second one is silent; K comes before i and e and C comes before the other three (a, o, and u);Use CK at the end of a word when the vowel is short and K and a silent e at the end of the word when the vowel is long

We will be working on maps and directional skills in Social Studies this month.  In October, we will be learning about subtraction, money, place value, and shapes in Math.  In Reading, we will continue to work on comprehension skills and reading strategies such as using picture clues and skipping over unknown words to make meaning of a sentence.  In Phonics, we will practice ay, sh, th, double consonants, e,o, or y at the end of a word it says it’s long sound .  We will have a review unit for spelling; I will send homework home on Monday and Tuesday only.  We are going to learn about the moon, stars, and the sun in Science.  In Bible, we will learn about the fall of man and God’s plan for redemption (THANK YOU JESUS!!!).

Happy Birthday to Nadia, Anthony H., Tabitha, and Micaiah, who celebrated birthdays in September.

We have no birthdays in October, so we will celebrate the summer birthdays this month. Halaina-Aug. 2nd, celebrate Oct. 7th; Nwanneka-July 11th, celebrate Oct.12th ; Sean-July 15th, celebrate Oct 15th; Naod-July 22nd, celebrate Oct. 22nd.  If parents want to send in something, we will have it during snack time at 2:30.

I would to take a field trip to Huber’s Farm this month.  If any parent can assist with this, I would love to hear from you (siblings are welcome).

I am sending sight words home for your child to practice regularly.  Please use this as part of their daily 15 minutes of reading per day.  They should practice them 3 times a week.

I put a reading calendar inside your child’s folder.  Please fill it out as you read to your child.  When it is filled, your child will receive a prize.

We will begin our Book It program this month.  Your child has a reading goal of 10 books a month.  I will send home a form for you to fill out next week.  When they complete their 10 books, just fill out the form and they will receive a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.

Please send a water bottle and a snack with your child every day.

If you did not send in dry erase markers and a dry eraser for your child, please do so.  I would like for each of them to have a supply of 10 for the year (1 per month).

Thanks for all of your support!

First Grade Newsletter
  September 7, 2009

Dear First Grade Parents,

I wanted to inform you of the great opening we had to the school year.  Your children are a blessing to minister to.  The items that I will cover in this letter are: All about Me Boxes, Student of the Week, Snack, Specials, and Homework.  Any other items I will address as needed.  I will post a monthly news letter on the website the first week of every month.  I will address what progress the students are making and any up coming events.

All about me boxes: The students will share their All about Me Boxes this week. Please have your child put 3-5 items about themselves in a box to share with the class.  Please do not send valuables.  Your child may decorate their box.

Student of the Week: Beginning next week, I will pick one student to bring in a picture of themselves and things they would like to share with the class.  Each day they will get 5 minutes to share something about themselves.  When your child gets picked, I will send home a paper asking for specific information.

Snack: Since our lunch time is at 10:45, I decided to let the students have a snack in the afternoon.  Please send a healthy snack in your child’s lunch.

Specials:

Monday-Library

Tuesday-Art & PE

Wednesday-Computer & Spanish

Thursday-Music

Friday- Computer & PE

Homework: Students will have spelling and math homework on Mondays, Tuesdays, & Thursdays.  It should only take 15 minutes plus reading.  It is only meant to keep you informed of their progress and to give them some extra practice.

Spelling will be to copy their words on the first night. They will copy the words in print form, not cursive. The next night, they will choose 3 words to write in a sentence.  Please assist them with this.  If they tell you the sentence, you may write it for them.  On Thursday, they will study their list.

Math will be practice from something that we worked on in class.

Reading is the most important homework that I will assign.  Please let your child read for 15 minutes a day. I will be sending home a reading calendar with your child.  Please initial and date the calendar confirming that your child has read.  When your child fills up the calendar, they will receive a pencil for their efforts.  We will also participate in the Book It program.

Please check the website for any updates. Thank you for all of your prayers and support.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the school.

Gratefully,

Debbie Hopp
