| Attendance
The mission of Prince George's County Public School is to ensure that all
students acquire knowledge and develop skills and understandings that will
enable them to become productive citizens and lifelong learners in a
technological, diverse society.
Student Attendance Is Critical
Attendance plays an important role in getting good grades in school.
Attendance is mandated - and enforceable through fines - under Maryland
State
law for students ages five to sixteen. Under this law, parents and
guardians
are responsible for ensuring that their child attends school or is provided
with regular, thorough, home instruction during the school year in the
subjects taught by public schools.
Maryland law also provides the following list of reasons that students
can be "lawfully" absent from school:
1. Death in the immediate family.
2. Illness of student.
3. Court Summons.
4. Hazardous weather conditions.
5. Work approved or sponsored by the school, the local school
system, or the State Department of Education, accepted by the
local superintendent of schools or the school principal, or
their designees as reason for excusing the students.
6. Observance of a religious holiday.
7. State emergency.
8. Suspension.
9. Lack of authorized transportation.
10. Other emergency or set of circumstances which, in the
judgement of the superintendent or designee, constitutes a
good and sufficient cause for absence from school.
Lawful or legitimate absences require a written explanation from the parent,
guardian, or custodian of the student and should be submitted to the
designated school authority upon return to school. This written note should
include the date of the absence as well as the reason.
What about students who are late for school?
It is important for students to be on time for school because the
official school roll book is marked during homeroom.
Student comming late to school are required to obtain a late pass
before being admitted to any classroom. Students are required to bring a
note from the parent or guardian explaining the reason for the lateness.
Classroom instruction start at 7:45 and ends at 1:50 p.m.
We, the staff at Perrywood Elementary School, would like your child to
be successful in school. In order for this to happen, students must attend
school on a regular basis. When students are absent or tardy, they miss
important information that can best be understood when they hear it directly
from classroom teachers.
