Hello and welcome to my website. I hope you will find it informative and
useful. A genuine effort is made to update it regularly so that all
assignments and the calendar are current.
This school is a very special place to me because I am a graduate of
Severna Park High School. I grew up in Severna Park and now live in
Annapolis with my husband, the youngest of my three children and a cockapoo
named Chloe. My degree is from Georgetown College, Georgetown, Kentucky.
After teaching at Annapolis High School and Bates Junior High for several
years and spending some time at home with young children and in sales, I
returned to teach Biology at SPHS from 1991-1994. For the next 9 years I
served as the Student Advocacy Specialist for AACPS and happily returned to
the classroom at SPHS in the fall of 2003!
In November of 2007 I learned that I had achieved National Board
Certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. My
certification is in the area of Adolescent and Young Adult Science with a
specialty in Biology. This is a tremendous honor and I am greatly indebted to
my students from the 2006-2007 school year who allowed themselves to be
videotaped, analyzed and studied for my portfolio entries. Although it was a
long and difficult process, I believe that it rightly helped me clarify and
refine my focus on student learning and achievement. Learning is always an
ongoing process for both teacher and students.
All students and parents are encouraged to email any questions or
concerns to me at:shannnahs@aacps.org.
High school is not only about acquiring credits to earn a diploma, it is
about learning: learning about yourself, others and the world around us. In
Science, we attempt to understand the natural world. As students, we attempt
to understand the way we learn and how to improve. In all cases, the goal is
to continue on our life-long journey of inquiry and discovery.
