Some Tips for Summer Reading!!!!! Keep summer reading fun, not a chore. Give your child plenty of books and time to enjoy them. Encourage your child to read every day. Reading newspapers and magazines counts! Make reading the "Kid's Post" part of the daily routine. Libraries and local bookstores run promotional programs. Sign your child up. See Incentive Programs on my website. Include a variety of books such as poetry, biography, and nonfiction, as well as folklore and fiction. Remember to vary the difficulty of reading material. Summer reading should be enjoyable, not a difficult challenge. When deciding if a book is at your child's reading level have them read a page from the middle of the book. If he doesn't know five or more words, then the book is too hard for pleasure reading. Keep books in the car. Get your child his own library card and go often. Help your child select books on topics they are interested in. When you take a trip to a museum, zoo, or point of interest, tie a book into the experience. Include books on tape with the summer reading experience. The entire family can enjoy the experience on a lengthy car trip. Let your child see you read. Set aside a time each week the family reads together. Remember your child is never to old to read to them. Set goals and reward reading. Discuss with your child what the reward will be when they finish a book. Reward reading with more reading. When your child finishes a book, stop by the bookstore or library and let them pick out more. Summer reading, for many children, needs to be encouraged by the school and parents. Have a wonderful summer! Please see individual websites for details. Maryland Public Libraries Barnes and Noble Pizza Hut McDonald's Borders |
