Happy Spring!
I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful Spring weather that we have been blessed with this year. Although a little snow would have been nice, I am glad that winter came and went quickly and that we are now looking ahead to many fun Spring events and activities! Easter break, of course, being at the top of the list in April!
In Reading we are continuing our transition to new sounds and spellings. Our focus continues to be on long vowel sounds, but now we are adding vowel digraphs such as ar, er, ir, ur, ow, ou, oo, ew. Again, these new sounds/spellings may be proving to be a challenge for your young reader, but, with continued practice, your child will soon begin to automatically apply this new knowledge.
In Science we have moved on to a new unit called Properties of Solids and Liquids. So far, we have visited the lab to compare properties of different solids and to see if they sink, float and are attracted to a magnet. After the investigation we used a graph to record and compare our results. It's always an interesting discussion when we try to determine why some groups get different results! During our next visit to the lab we will investigate properties of liquids such as oil, vinegar and syrup. This will be a fun and messy one!
In Social Studies we are learning about Maps! We have discussed early maps, cardinal direction, different types of maps and parts of a map. Each child has created a beautiful map of the world that will be coming home soon! Then, at the end of April we will enjoy a mini-unit about Earth Day. Each child will be asked to create something from...yes, you guessed it...recycled TRASH!
Another exciting event that has already happened in our classroom this Spring is the addition of our new student Thomas Mosquera! Please help me welcome Thomas and his family into our St. Francis family!
As always, thank you for checking and cleaning out F.R.O.G. regularly and for consistently helping your child complete homework neatly and accurately. You guys ROCK!!
