My name is Doreen May. I grew up in Scotch Plains, New Jersey and attended
college at Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts where I met my
husband. We were married two years after college and settled here in
Maryland where my husband grew up. I began teaching in 1977 at St. John the
Evangelist in Silver Spring, Md, where I taught third grade and kindergarten
for eight years. I left St. Johns in the spring of 1985 to give birth to my
first daughter, Caitlin. Twenty months later I had my second daughter,Bridget
and remained at home for the next twelve years. I spent many happy hours
caring for my family, volunteering at St. Jude (HSA Vice President and
Founder of the Hot Lunch Program ) and substituting at Millian Methodist
Preschool. In 1993 I gave birth to my son Brendan and three years later began
a Kindergarten enrichment program in my home called "Kinderchallenge". I ran
this program for three years and finally decided to return to full time
teaching when my oldest left for high school and Brendan was ready to enter
kindergarten.
This is my ninth year at St. Jude and I have truly enjoyed my
years here, both as a parent and as a teacher. My oldest daughter, Caitlin
is a first year Law Student at the Columbus School of Law at Catholic
University. My daughter Bridget is a junior at John Carroll University in
Cleveland, Ohio. Brendan is in 8th grade this year! He is serving on the
altar at St. Patricks , playing football and basketball and quickly
approaching high school.
That's me in a nutshell. My hobbies are walking, gardening
and "shopping" when I get the chance!!
My Philosophy of Teaching
My philosophy of teaching lies in my love and concern for the children
that I work with each day. I believe that learning is best facilitated by an
instructor who balances sound theory with effective teaching methods. A
reliance on various modalities in the classroom enables students of varying
abilities to come together in the learning process. Through the use of short
lecture, interactive discussion, small group work and playful competition,
students experience the joy of working together to develop new ideas and
understand the world around them.
As a Catholic educator, I feel that I work in partnership with the Holy
Spirit. Through His inspiration and guidance, I attempt to lead my students
to God’s truth and to an understanding of how His word influences their
lives. With an emphasis on personal self-discipline and dedication to hard
work, I challenge my students to continually strive for their best as they
work towards reaching their true potential in life.
It is my ultimate desire that all of my students leave my classroom
with the knowledge that they are unique and special children of God who
believe in the beauty and possibilities inherent in their dreams. This is
the driving force behind my desire to remain an effective influence in the
lives of the children I am privileged to meet each day.
"Do everything. Love as much as you can. It may hurt, but it helps us
grow. Give all you have...you may be poor but you will be content. Always
forgive....your heart cannot afford not to. Teach what you know and learn
what you don't. Stay open to all you can, but most importantly, dream your
dream and then capture it... "
