Test taking Tips

Study Strategies:
1. Establish a routine to be followed when getting ready for school, doing
homework etc.
2. Make sure your child sees the relationship between behavior and
consequences. It may be beneficial to have a monthly chart on the
refrigerator to check off the positive daily activities completed i.e.
homework, changing into play clothes etc. and providing a small reward for a
good week.
3. Establish homework rules.
4. Make sure your child has a quiet and well-lit place to do his/her
homework. It may be beneficial to have a timer. For example, set the timer
at fifteen minute intervals. After the timer goes off, your child can have a
break before tackling the next assignment.
5. Sit in the same room with your child while he/she is doing homework. You
could read the paper etc. so as to be close for academic support.
6. Make a note of the time it takes your child to complete the homework each
night. It may be that he/she has too much for his/her ability level and you
could speak with the teacher regarding the this issue.
7. Make positive comments about school and the importance of doing homework.
8. It may be necessary to hire a tutor so as to reinforce concepts that your
child may not have integrated into his/her long term memory.
9. Help your child study for tests and quizzes.
10. Encourage your child to ask for help if he/she needs it.
11. Reduce distractions at home when your child is studying.
12. Check over your child's homework so that you can be certain that it was
done and that your child understands the assignment. If you can see that
your child had trouble, try to help him/her. Write a note to the teacher
about the homework problem so that the teacher can reteach him/her any missed
concept.
