Math Strategies:
1. Teach your child to recognize patterns. For example, any number + 0 =
the number.
2. Make sure your child knows the verbage for number signs. For example -
means less, take away, and minus.
3. Use mnemonics for basic computation. For example, "Danny makes small
boats," can represent divide, multiply, subtract and bring down.
4. Use real-life experiences for learning about money.
5. Color-code math symbols before doing the process.
6. Allow your child to use a calculator to check the math answers.
7. For word problems, strongly encourage your child to reread the problem
two times before deciding upon a process.
8. Teach you child clue words. For example, "how many in all?", "what was
left over?".
9. For word problems, teach your child guiding questions; such as, What is
the question being asked in the problem? What information do you need to
figure out the problem? What operation should you use to solve the problem?
10. For beginning math learners, provide a number line (a foot ruler). For
money problems, use real coins. Graph paper may be helpful in number
alignment.
