Summer Reading/Writing Requirements For Incoming 5th Grade

Below is a list of books for summer reading. The books on the list include a wide range of subject material as well as reading level. The books are available from the public library, local bookstores and on-line. Many of the books are available on tape.

The students must choose any three books from the list for their summer reading requirement. Once they have read their selections, they are required to provide a brief synopsis of each book. The reports should include the following information:

Student’s Name

Grade/class

Date

Title of the book

Author

Main characters

A brief description of the story

A sentence-stating if you would recommend the book to a friend

The reports may be neatly hand written or typed 12 pt, double, spaced. For each book, the report should not be longer than one page. The reports are due the first week of school and the students will receive a grade in English and Reading.

Some of the books are more difficult to read than others. When choosing a book, turn to the middle and read two or three pages. If there are as many as five or more words that you don’t know the meaning of or can’t pronounce than the book is probably too difficult for you. If you can read the pages easily than you will most likely enjoy reading the entire book.

I hope that you will read more than the three books required. Take a book along – anytime you have to wait at a doctor or dentist’s office or at a restaurant as well as on vacation. Get a book on tape for those long car rides. The most important thing is to READ! READ! READ!

I hope that you have a wonderful summer and I will see you in the library next year.

                                                                        Enjoy your summer!
