My overall philosophy of education can be expressed in a single sentence: We
all learn together. We will have an atmosphere of high expectations and
mutual respect in music. Everyone is responsible for his or her own
learning, and must come to class ready to learn. This means that the teacher
and the students are prepared and have open minds. Everyone's opinion is
valued, but you must be able to defend your opinion in a group discussion.
It is not enough to say we like or dislike a piece of music; we need to
understand why.
In music class, students will learn how to listen to music, how to perform
it, how to think about it, how to create their own, and how to explain it to
other people. Certain content and skills will be mastered, while introducing
students to the greatest possible diversity of music. Each student will
learn about rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics, how music is written on the page,
how different instruments make sound, and how music expresses the cultural
context in which it is created. We will all participate in performing music,
offer our own views and suggestions, and listen respectfully to others'
opinions.
