Reading Skills

***Important strategies to work on while you are reading to your child or your child is reading to you.

 
  • Read to your child.  Let your child hear expression in your voice.
  • Let your child read to you.  When you go out to dinner, let them read the menu to you.
  • Some stories may appear to easy, but they are crucial to developing good comprehension skills!!! They also build confidence in early readers.
  • Try some predicting before you read.
  • Do a picture walk.  What does your child see?                               
  • Monitor comprehension: What do you already know? What do you want to know? What happened? 
  •  Think critically
  • Discuss "fantasy" and "reality".
  • Observe important punctuation
  • Who is the author? Who is the illustrator? What are their jobs? 
  •  What is the sequence of the story?
  • Let your child go back to the illustrations to help them. Look carefully! The illustrator plays an important role in the story.
  • Who are the characters?
  • What is the setting? (Where does the story take place? 
  •  What is the plot? (What happens?)
  • Sequence of events....
  • Problem? Solution?
