Course Expectations, Guidelines, Grading Policy and Code of Conduct

French Dictionary is required in French 3-5 and novels for these levels will be purchased from former students or ordered through Madame during the course.

La Description du Cours: Bienvenue à la classe de français!
Throughout the semester, you will be exposed to the spoken language and will be expected to use it in the classroom. I will maintain high standards and my expectations regarding your performance will match those. Take advantage of this opportunity. You will be able to communicate more efficiently in French if you take notes, follow directions, study and practice using your French outside of the classroom on a regular basis.
Les Objectifs du Cours:
This year you will be able to:
-Refine your listening comprehension skills.
-Communicate orally, incorporating increasingly more complex grammatical structures, vocabulary and idiomatic expressions.
-Express yourselves in writing in French using descriptive and efficient vocabulary and grammar.
-Read in French. For the higher levels, you will read and discuss French literature.
Les Matériels: Supplies for Class: A blue or black pen, one red pen, textbook, workbook and French binder with plenty of loose-leaf paper are required everyday. The binders and workbooks will be collected and graded. No other subjects are to be in your French binder.
Absence: Students are responsible for all class work, notes, homework, quizzes and tests missed during an absence. Each student must choose 2 RESPONSIBLE study partners who will be able to inform him/her of class work missed. Homework assignments are on this website under DEVOIRS.
Any work missed must be made up when the student returns unless the parent/guardian has written a short note explaining why the student was unable to complete the assignment. In cases of severe illness, more time (5 days) is given for students to make up the work missed.
Devoirs/Homework: Each day there will be an oral, written and/or study assignment. It will be written on the white board in class and on this website. The assignments should be written down each day or copied and pasted from this website under DEVOIRS. We will always check for homework completion and go over the written assignments. Sometimes the homework will be collected and graded. Those who have not done their daily assignments will receive a zero. Each zero equals two points off your grade average. One point off will be taken for work half completed. The written assignments for level one and two are very short. Usually they can be completed within 10 minutes. All workbooks assignments should be done with the textbook OPEN to check for accuracy. Most of the time you spend at home preparing for French class will be spent studying the vocabulary and grammar.
Participation and Marking System: Quizzes: 30%, Quests: 30%, Tests: 20% and Oral Participation/Homework: 20%.
If students are told to study, they should expect a quiz the next day. STUDENTS ARE QUIZZED OFTEN. SPECIAL OFFER: Students who do not do well on a quiz have an opportunity to retake the quiz within three school days and have the two grades averaged. The retake may only be taken once per quiz. The retake is not the exact copy of the original, but the subject matter is the same. No one is permitted to retake a quest or test. There will be one major project per quarter. No project will be accepted late! ORAL PARTICIPATION grades are given frequently. The more a student participates, the better his/her oral participation grade will be. Students off task during the class lose participation points.
Les Règles de la Classe: Classroom Rules:
1. NO CHEWING GUM NOR CANDY! Pronunciation needs all the help it can get! Students caught chewing gum win the right to scrape gum off desks after school.
2. Upon entering the class, sit in your seat, copy down the homework assignment, get out the previous night's assignment and start the drill on the board or overhead. Failure to write down the daily assignment will lower your binder grade.

YOU MUST RAISE YOUR HAND TO RECEIVE RECOGNITION!
4. You are expected to cooperate with substitute teachers. ( Madame is rarely absent.)
5. Students must arrive on time to class or with an excused pass.
6. You will be dismissed by ME at the end of the period. REMAIN IN YOUR SEATS UNTIL I DISMISS YOU!
7. Have only materials related to French class on your desktop. No studying for the next period's test!
8. Students are expected to do their OWN work. The school policy on cheating WILL be enforced. All reference work must be sited. See student handbook for details.
Code of Conduct:
I will treat everyone with courtesy and respect.
I will come to school prepared for learning.
I will act responsibly and accept the consequences for my actions.
I will treat personal and school property with respect.
I will create and maintain a positive and safe environment.
Consequences for not following the Classroom Rules or Code of Conduct:
1. Warning (except for cheating)
2. Personal Detention after school or Time-Out
3. Major Detention
4. Conference with administration and follow-up with parents
Extra Help: Extra help is available. If you are struggling, please see me before or after school for help or advice. I would prefer notice if you are coming in for longer than one half hour. Sessions are in room B2.
Remember it IS possible to learn a foreign language and enjoy the class. The key to success is to keep up with the work from day one. That takes a special commitment.
