I'm so happy to be returning for my third year teaching at Calverton in
2008-2009. I spent most of my childhood growing up in New Hampshire, but
have lived many other different places too, including Connecticut,
California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Sweden, and Pennsylvania.
I've been teaching children for a long time, both in formal classroom
settings and in more informal situations, like Girl Scout camp. When I went
to college, I had no intention of being a teacher, but two summers teaching
at Summerbridge Manchester, in Manchester, NH, changed my plans.
Summerbridge Manchester is a member of the national Breakthrough
Collaborative, located in San Francisco, CA, which aims to get underserved
middle school students on the path to college and high school and college
students interested in teaching as a career. For two summers, I taught math
and Women's History, and totally enjoyed it.
I still wasn't sure that teaching was the career for me, so I went off to
Allentown, PA to work for a Girl Scout council for three years. Life in the
cubicle was not exciting, so I went back to New Hampshire for graduate
school to become a teacher. After two years in public high schools in New
Hampshire, I was ready for a change of scenery and weather, so here I am in
Maryland!
In my free time, I like to sing in a chorus, read, watch a little reality
TV, and hit the museums in DC. I taught myself to knit from a book
and with occasional help from my mom. I love to travel. Ask me about my
semester abroad in Sweden, and choral trips to Costa Rica in 1999, England
and Wales in summer 2005, and China in summer 2007.
In addition to my teaching responsibilities for 9th and 11th grade, I advise
Calverton's chaper of the National Honor Society and the "It's Academic"
team.
