Dear Parents and Guardians,
I
want to introduce you to our STAR folders. This
is a very important part of my teaching because it is a means of communicating
with you. As
you may have noticed, STAR is an acronym for Students Taking Academic
Responsibility. Your
child is required to bring this folder home
daily and
is also responsible for bringing it back to school in the mornings.
I will be checking the
contents of the folder each morning. Here is how it is organized:
-
plastic bag:
please place any lunch
money, field trip money, etc into this pouch.
-
class list:
for your personal reference
-
homework:
one side will house homework that needs to come back to school, including the
reading log, and the other will contain all the work that I have checked and
can stay at home.
-
Decodable story for the
week:
Decodable stories are
given out weekly. Students
should practice them and from time to time homework maybe based on the story.
-
Important Notes:
Notes from school
that need your attention.
-
Important Papers From
School: Papers
that need to be checked and signed.
-
Extra Help Needed:
Interventions that you
can use with your child to help them with skills that are being taught.
-
calendars/newsletters:
keep this as a reference for the school year. Will
be updated monthly.
-
parent/teacher
communication:
one side will be for notes that need to be signed and returned to school. You
can also place notes for me in this pocket. The other will be for
information that you simply need to read.
-
Progress Reports:
Information
to keep you informed of your child’s progress.
-
Spelling Flash cards/math
facts: Weekly
spelling words and math facts flash cards.
-
Tear-Offs Slips:
Important papers,
reports, newsletters tear-off slips that need to be returned.
The STAR folder is great way to
keep us both organized and encourage communication. It
will also encourage responsibility in the students. I have supplied all of the
items in the STAR folder at the beginning of this school year.
If any items are lost and
damaged during the school year, it will be the responsibility of the family to
replace those items.
I
am very excited about having your child in class this year and as his/her
parent/guardian, I view you as my partner in educating your child.
While we will be
discussing the components of this folder in class, please also discuss it with
your child, reinforcing the importance of staying organized to prevent any
problems in the future. Please
sign the bottom of this form and return it to school in this folder.
If you have any
questions, please don’t hesitate to call me at 410-396-0534 or
email me at cwhye@bcps.k12.md.us.
Thank you,
Ms. Whye
