Frequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
How much time should my fifth grader spend reading each day?
Depending on how "enthusiastic" your child is about reading, the key is to have your child spend time reading with FOCUS. I look for students to be able to read 20 to 30 minutes at a stretch without stopping. If your child does not normally read this amount each day, start with ten solid minutes of reading. Work up to 30 minutes gradually. We don't want reading to become a complete "chore" but students do need to be able to sit quietly, avoid outside distractions, and read carefully for extended lengths of time.Back to Top

What should my fifth grader read?
ANYTHING! Newspapers, magazines, books, cereal boxes, whatever they like. Assigned reading will be given but reading for pleasure should be just that...something they WANT to read.Back to Top
