What is Maryland History Day? Maryland History Day is the state level competition of the National History Day. Each year students around the country have an opportunity to create projects to show their knowledge in history. Many schools and counties have Science Fairs that provide enrichment for Science classes and the History Day Project allows for that same opportunity within Social Studies. Each year a new theme is selected. The theme for this year is Comflict and Compromise. Students are to develop a project that uses this theme. They are open to select topics of their own interest that tie into this theme. Students will submit their topics to the teacher for approval before completing their project. In addition to selecting a topic, students will develop a research question and thesis statement for their project. This component of the project will be explained and demonstrared in the classroom. Before the students begin to really develop their project they are to be sure to make sure that their topic fits the following criteria: 1.) The Topic must fit the Theme: 2.) The Topic must be doable- a topic that can be researched to answer a specific question, thus proving a thesis or theory the student may have about the topic. 3.) The Topic must be loveable.- Students will be working on this project from now until January and they need to be committed to its completion. In creating this project, students also have two more options. Students may choose to work alone, as a pair, or as a group of three or four. The other option for students is the actual project type. The project types are as follows. 1.) Research Paper.................................................... Individually done only 2.) An Exhibit- backboard and artifacts............................... Individual, Pairs, Group 3.) A Documentary .................................................... Individual, Pairs, Group 4.) A Performance..................................................... Individual, Pairs, Group 5.) A Web Project- New category info coming soon. Students should choose their project type and choice of group members carefully. Students have been given a History Day Packet that they are to be resonsible for. They should have it with them in class everyday as we wil be completing some portions of the project in class. Students will be given some computer and library time in school, however most of the project will be completed at home as part of their homework for class.
