FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
What is the 2009-2010 grading policy? Please see ANNOUNCEMENTS page for Grading Policies. What is the Practice Log Grading Policy? A = 150+ Minutes/week B = 120-149 Minutes/week C = 90-119 Minutes/week D = 60-89 Minutes/week E = >60 Minutes/week Anybody can challenge the chair ahead of them. YOU DO NOT NEED TO FILL OUT A CHALLENGE SLIP AND HAVE IT SIGNED BY THE PERSON YOU ARE CHALLENGING. STUDENTS WILL HAVE ADVANCE NOTICE (AT LEAST A WEEK) OF CHALLENGE WEEKS BUT MAY NOT HAVE ADVANCE NOTICE THAT SOMEONE IS CHALLENGING THEM. SO.....ALWAYS BE PREPARED DURING CHALLENGES TO BE CHALLENGED!!!!! If somebody challenges you, you can not refuse the challenge. Challenges will take place on a few selected weeks only. Students will be notified in advance of Challenge dates. If you challenge someone, then miss the sectional rehearsal, you WILL lose your opportunity to challenge. If you skip sectionals the week of Challenges, you MAY lose your seat as a result of it. In order to challenge someone, you MUST turn your practice log in that week with 90 minutes or more on it for the current week. REMEMBER, if you do not show up for a sectionals during a challenge week, and someone challenges you, you MAY lose your seat. When can I turn in my practice log? Practice logs are accepted ONLY at sectional rehearsals. If you do not have it, you will not get credit for it. Remember Log #1 can only be turned in during the first 1/3 of the quarter. Log #2 can only be turned in during the middle 1/3 of the quarter. Log #3 can only be turned in during the final 1/3 of the quarter. Dates will be clearly marked on EACH practice log as to when each log can be turned in. Why the NEW Practice Log policy? I have added dates to when each Practice Log can be turned in to help encourage students to practice ALL quarter long. Not just the first 3 weeks, or try to squeeze it in the final 3 weeks of the quarter. Dates will be CLEARLY marked on the practice log as to when each Practice Log will be accepted. What is the difference between Wind Ensemble and Concert Band? The Wind Ensemble is made up of band members in grades 6,7 and 8. ALL 8th grade band members are automatically selected to Wind Ensemble because of scheduling. 6th and 7th Grade members are selected after an audition process in the beginning of the school year. The Concert Band is made up of band members in grades 6 & 7. Students are selected for Concert Band after an audition process in the beginning of the school year. Students are given 1 opportunity to re-audition (if they so choose) for band placement in December/January. 7th grade band members who are in Concert Band will flip their lunch time with core plus time (on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday ) so that they may attend Concert Band rehearsals. See Mr. Jackowski for more details. 6th grade band members who are selected to Wind Ensemble will flip their lunch time with core plus time so that they may attend Wind Ensemble rehearsals. See Mr. Jackowski for more details. When does Jazz Band meet and who can be in it? Jazz Band meets Wednesdays after school from 3:10 - 4:10pm It is made up of 6th/7th/8th Grade students that are selected following the Jazz Band auditions held in October. What if I miss a sectional rehearsal? First, remember 20% of your grade is attendance. Second, if you are IN SCHOOL and SKIP a sectional rehearsal, you may loose your chair if somebody challenges you. If missing sectionals becomes a repeated offense, you may loose your chair because of it. If a playing test occurs during a sectional that you miss, you may receive a zero for your grade, depending on the reason for missing sectionals. If you forget to come to sectionals, you may lose points under the ATTENDANCE and/or PARTICIPATION portions of your grade. The band uniform consists of the WHITE LKMS MUSIC POLO shirt and black pants/skirt for ALL concerts the entire year EXCEPT Hershey Park...that uniform consists of the WHITE LKMS MUSIC POLO shirt and khaki pants/capris. NO SHORTS. Where can I find a list of private instructors? HCPSS supplies a list of private instructors... Here is the web address: http://hcpsm.blogspot.com Look on the RIGHT side of the page for PRIVATE INSTRUCTORS. ALL CONCERT BAND AND WIND ENSEMBLE MEMBERS need to purchase Foundations for Superior Performance Playing tests, are announced or unannounced quizes that occur during sectionals, where students are asked to play sections of the music we are currently working on. Students get graded on their performance and the grade is factored in as part of their playing grade for the entire quarter. If a student misses a sectional and misses a playing test, their score may be affected. Each test is worth 10 points, if a student forgets to come, they will lose 2 points automatically and the highest score they may receive will be 8 when they are given a make-up playing test. Students must receive a score of 7 or higher to pass the playing test and keep their current PLAYING points earned for the quarter. Any playing test that scores 6 or lower will result in the loss of PLAYING points for that quarter.
