LANDFORMS
plateau- a large elevated piece of land that is nearly level on top.
peninsula- a piece of land that sticks out from the mainland and is surrounded
by water on three sides.
cape- smaller version of a peninsula
isthmus- a piece of land that connects two larger pieces of land.
plain- a large area of relatively flat land with few trees.
valley- An area between two hills or mountains, might contain a river or stream.
canyon- similar to a valley, but sides are steep, cliff like.
continent- any of the seven largest areas of land on earth.
island- a piece of land that is completely surrounded by water.
archipelago- a group of islands.
landlocked- an area of land that is surrounded by land, no access to water
that could be used as a port for shipping goods.
WATERFORMS
strait- a smaller body of water that connects two larger bodies of water.
gulf- a large body of water that is partially enclosed by land.
bay- smaller version of a gulf.
river source- the beginning point of a river.
river mouth- the point where a river ends its course.
river delta- the land build up that happens when the river mouth meets a
larger body of water. The river will split causing a webbing look.
river basin- The land area that is drained by a river system.
tributary- when a smaller river meets and empties into a larger waterway.
MAP TERMS
map symbol- a symbol that represents information on a map.
key or legend- the place on a map that explains what the symbols mean.
map source- where the information for the map comes from.
mental map- a map that is in your head.
regions- land areas that are focused upon.(Mid West, Middle East, West Coast).
hemisphere- half of a sphere, Earth.
latitude- an imaginary line that runs horizontally across the earth.
longitude- an imaginary line that runs vertically across the earth.
equator- the zero line of latitude that divides the earth into the Northern
and Southern hemispheres.
Prime Meridian- the zero line of longitude that divides the earth into the
Eastern and Western hemispheres.
