April 2012 All middle school students will be visiting their respective high schools on May 8th. Students attending Reservoir will walk over, and those attending River Hill or Atholton will soon be bringing home permission slips to take a bus. February 2012 High School Transition Meetings will take place at Lime Kiln Middle School. In addition to you, the parent or guardian, the Special Education Instructional Team Leader from the High School will attend the meeting, as well as the student, Ms. Sampson, Mrs. Velencia, and any Related Service providers as necessary. We will discuss the student's high school service hours, their schedule, and address any concerns you or your student has concerning high school. River Hill High School will be here on March 8th. Atholton High School will be here in April (date TBA) Reservoir High School will be here on May 10th. By now, you should have received a notice with the time of your meeting. These meetings generally run about 20 minutes. If you have any questions, please contact me. January 2012 High School Scheduling Information nights- Jan 4 - River Hill High School Jan 10 - Atholton High School These programs are for families of all students (including rising 9th graders) Atholton, Reservoir and River Hill will be visiting Lime Kiln students on January 13 during their related arts time block. This is a wonderful opportunity for your students to be introduced to staff from their high schools and to learn about the scheduling process. If you think your son or daughter may be interested in a Career Academy path during high school, information is available at the following locations: January 17, 2012 - Miller Branch, Howard County Public Library Academies being featured: Human Resource Services; Consumer Services, Hospitality and Tourism; Manufacturing, Engineering and Techology; Information Technology; and Business, Management, and Finance January 26, 2012 - East Columbia Branch, Howard County Public Library Academies being featured: Arts, Media & Communication; Career, Research and Development Program; Construction and Development; Transportation Technologies; and Health and Biosciences Looking ahead...on May 8, all eighth grade students will visit the high schools that they are districted to attend. This day provides an opportunity for students to mingle with their new freshman class, to meet high school staff, hear about the high school process, and be introduced to extra-curricular sports and clubs. December 2011 - Just before we all exit for Winter Break, teachers will be busy articulating with Atholton High School, River Hill High School and Reservoir High School. Why so soon? Teacher recommendations for high school classes are due to Lime Kiln Student Services a few days after our return to school in 2012. During the second week of January, students will see those recommendations when we meet during our reading classes to learn about high school course selections, four-year plans, and electives. Expect to see the schedule by the end of the second week of January. If your son or daughter is recommended for a Math or English Seminar course, please note that this is considered an elective. These recommendations occur based on MSA testing results, quarterly assessment scores, classroom grades and other testing. Please be aware that these schedules are open for change. For example, when the IEP team meets in the spring for students' transition meetings, we may decide that adding a Tutorial class is in the student's best interest. Please contact Student Services or me for answers to your questions. September 2011 - Welcome back to Lime Kiln for your final year of middle school. Our focus this year is to get you ready to be successful in high school. For parents, please be aware that this year, your son or daughter will have a minimum of two meetings - their annual review and their transition to high school meeting. Annual review dates are specific to the date the last one occurred. Transition meetings are held at LKMS in the spring, at the discretion of the high school representative. Eighth grade teacher web page links are on my links page which will make it easy for you to access everyone from one place. If you have any questions, email is the best way to communicate. Let's have a great year!
