Week in Preview

Welcome to our Week in Preview:

Week Starting 11/23

Thanksgiving break starts Wednesday 11/25

ELA: This week we will finish working with The Hundred Dollar Bill. We will
break into small groups on Monday to have discussions on an interpretive
question. Kids will then use evidence from the story to answer the question
in an organized paragraph. They will also do some work with vocabulary with
the story.
In writing we are working on a personal narrative unit. Kids are listening to
models of narrative writing and are doing writing explorations based on
different elements from the models.

Math: In math we will be working on finding a strategy for determining the
angle sums of any polygon.

Science: On Monday we will go over the science test and use a news story to
write a current event. Tuesday we will use the kids pet rocks from our Mt.
Apetite Field Trips to look at some of their special properties.

This week in Spanish, we completed our unit on the days of the week, and began
learning some adjectives. Students have a new vocabulary handout, which
should be on top of their Spanish binders. As a homework assignment, students
were to illustrate each adjective on their handout (in the blank spot provided
beside each word). This weekend, and over the course of Thanksgiving break,
students should practice the new words, first by folding away the English,
reading the Spanish aloud and associating it with the picture they have drawn,
and then by folding away their pictures, reading the Spanish aloud and trying
to recall their picture. Ultimately, students should be able to look at their
pictures and provide the appropriate Spanish word. In the two days before
break, we will practice recognizing the new vocabulary through several group
games and communicative activities, and in the week following break we will
begin to work with the verb ser (to be), combined with our adjectives, to
describe ourselves and others. Students should see me to schedule any
make-ups or extra practice next week, as we don't have school on Wednesday
(our regular Spanish catch-up day). Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

Last week students continued to practice animal and preposition vocabulary.
Ask your child to sing the preposition song for you. They will use their
hands to show each preposition. Students began to create their own sentences
and illustrated them. We put them on the board and shared them with the
class. On Friday we played téléphone with their sentences.

Next week and before Thanksgiving break we will review body parts in French
and practice writing the words.

Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns or comments. I am
available before and after school most days by appointment.
