The Wabanaki of Maine consists of four nations or tribes. Wabanaki
means "People of the Dawnland".
The Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians received federal recognition in 1980.
Since then, they have built a tribal center on their lands along the
Meduxnekeag River near Houlton.
The Micmac nation is located in Presque Isle. They finally received federal
recognition in 1991.
The Passamaquoddy have two locations in eastern Maine. Sipayik overlooking
the ocean is at Pleasant Point. Motahkokmikuk is located 50 miles inland at
Indian Township.
The Penobscot nation is located on Indian Island, near Old Town.
