MARVEL! provides every resident of Maine with access to a collection of full
text and abstracts from magazines, newspapers and reference books that are
credible, reputable resources. MARVEL! also provides students, business
people, public library patrons, and higher education students and educators
the ability to search a number of resources at one time for needed
information. The print value of the resources provided in these databases
would be in excess of $500,000 per library!
For Junior High School students, the following databases of Marvel! will be
the most particularly useful.
KIDS SEARCH is designed for younger students. It has an easy-to-use interface
with appealing graphics and includes searchable full-text articles from more
than 50 of the most popular K-12 magazines.
MIDDLE SEARCH PLUS and MAS ULTRA-SCHOOL EDITION are geared to students from
middle school through high school. Both databases provide searchable full text
of articles, book reviews, pamphlets, abstracts, charts, tables and historical
documents. MIDDLE SEARCH PLUS has over 400,00 articles and MAS ULTRA-SCHOOL
ADDITION has over 1 million articles and over 460 magazines for grades K-12.
STUDENT RESEARCH CENTER is designed particularly for students in grades six
through 12. It is student-friendly, easy to search and covers a variety of
topics from the arts to science and technology. Included are full-text
magazine articles, encyclopedia content, sections of reference books and more.
The "visual searching" capability is an interesting and new way to get to the
information you need.
ANNALS OF AMERICAN HISTORY is a great resource of primary source materials for
student history projects. "Annals" contains more than 2,100 original full-text
source documents on American history from 1493 to the present. It includes
speeches, essays, biographies, landmark court decisions, poems, interviews and
editorials from more than 1,500 authors, and can be searched by topic or author.
LITERATURE RESOURCE CENTER is a tool for the literature students. Rich in
biographical, bibliographical and critical content, the Literature Resource
Center is a wonderful internet resource for information on literary figures
from all time periods writing in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, history
and journalism.
CONTEMPORARY AUTHORS provides a biographical and bibliographical guide to
authors living during the last 40 years.
MAINE NEWSTAND is a portal to the archives of newspaper articles printed
locally and throughout the state.
PROQUEST NEWSPAPERS offer more than 500 newspapers for the latest news in
print, both national and international. It includes the Bangor and Portland
newspapers.
NOVELIST and NOVELIST K-8 give information on fiction books to read. They
include plots, discussion questions, author read-likes, genre book lists,
series titles, and thematic units for teachers. They can be searched in many
ways including title,author, subject, series, plot, publisher, and reviews.
HEALTH SOURCES: CONSUMER EDITION gives authoritative health information than
can sometimes get filtered out on the net. MARVEL!
