Vacant Lot Archeology - assigned Wednesday, October 28th
Study the drawing of the vacant lot on the sheet provided in class. Indentify
5 artifacts that tell you something about the people who use the vacant lot.
Then complete the chart on the back side of the worksheet.
In your notebook write a one page, 10-12 sentence story about the artifact you
choose.

your participation grade will suffer and you will not be able to participate.

The student's are working on a book about the 5 themes of Geography. They have
been assigned grade levels from kindergarden - 4th grade.
I encourage them to use their creativity. This project will be worked on in
Mrs Walker's & Ms. Lindsay's ELA classes and Mrs. Clark's Social Studies
class. The student will focus on understanding the 5 themes of Geography and
improving their writing. Below is the assignment and the rubric for the Social
Studies assignment.
MR LIP Children’s Flip Book Assignment
MR LIP is more than just a handy way to remember the five themes of geography.
He also investigates the case of total and utter confusion with each of the 5
themes to help make them clearer to children.
To complete this assignment, you will need to organize your material on the
Five Themes and prepare a children’s flip book that includes the following:
Cover to your children’s book with a picture of MR LIP
Seven (7) pages –
• an introductory page – should introduce the MR LIP’s goal to end confusion
about each of the five themes
• a page on each of the five themes - An explanation of each theme in “kid
friendly terms”
• concluding page – that wraps up MR LIP’s journey to reduce confusion about
the five themes
Color pictures that illustrates each theme
Your final book will be due on Friday, October 23, 2009.

Accuracy of Facts
All facts presented in the story are accurate.
Spelling and Punctuation
There are no spelling or punctuation errors in the final draft. Character and
place names that the author invented are spelled consistently throughout.
Illustrations
Illustrations are detailed, attractive, creative and relate to the text on the
page.
Neatness
The final draft of the story is readable, clean, neat and attractive. It is
free of erasures and crossed-out words. It looks like the author took great
pride in it.
Organization
The story is very well organized. One idea or scene follows another in a
logical sequence with clear transitions.
