Counseling Services

The counseling department offers a variety of services to the students of
MSK and their families. These include:

Individual Counseling. Providing one-on-one services to help students work
through the emotional struggles they face, including social difficulties,
anxiety issues, educational difficulties, and other barriers to academic
success. The focus of these sessions is helping the student to identify the
difficulties they face and develop the coping skills necessary to
successfully work through these challenges.

Group Counseling. Providing services to a small group of students to
address issues that several students may be experiencing simultaneously.
These include organizational skills, friendship and social skills, the
impact of divorce or other life changing events, and study skills, to name a
few. These groups often occur for a limited amount of time, but may be on-
going depending on the topic and the needs of the students involved.

Crisis intervention. Working with students to process their emotions, find
coping skills, and work toward solutions when facing a difficult situation.
As the definition of a crisis situation can vary, depending on the student,
from topics such as the death of a family member to the emotional ups and
downs involved in being a middle school student. These interventions tend
to be short term, with the intent to refer the student to outside therapy if
the situation may require more services than can be provided in a short term
school intervention.

Consultation. Maintaining contact with teachers, parents, and outside
service providers to make sure that the student is receiving consistent
messages and support from all of the adults involved in their lives.
