1. Holocaust- 1933-1945 - when 6 million Jews were murdered by the Nazis
2. fascism- A form of government led by one ruler
3. racism- Hatred against a particular race of people
4. persecution- Bullying, harassment and killing of a group of people because of their beliefs, culture, social status, etc.
5. genocide-annihilation of a group of people
6. anti-Semitism- against anything or anyone Jewish
7. Aryan- Hitler's ideal person- German born, tall with blue eyes and blond hair
8. chancellor- Hitler became this in 1933
9. Nazis- National Socialist German Workers' Party- followers of Hitler
10. allies-countries fighting against the Nazis during World War II- France, Great Britain, United States, etc.
11. ghettos-The Nazis rounded up Jews and locked them inside the poorest areas of cities- conditions were awful- unsanitary, overcrowded, little food and no medicine.
12. ration- A certain amount of food/clothing given to an individual during war time to prevent hoarding.
13. concentration camps- Jews, Gypsies, Homosexuals, Physically and Mentally Handicapped, Partisans and other minorities were sent to these prisons. They were worked to death or immediately killed. Some died from starvation, while others died from disease.
14. pogrom-an organized massacre
15. blood liable-The rumor that started a long time ago that Jews stole children to drink their blood for a Jewish ritual. Dr. Goebbels used this fear tactic rumor during the Holocaust as propaganda to spread fear and hatred against the Jews.

26. Arbeit Macht Frei- Translates to Work Will Liberate- this phrase was over the entrance gates to many concentration camps- use of propaganda by the Nazis.
27. propaganda- the spreading of information to injure or promote a cause, a group, a belief. Dr. Goebbels was the Propaganda leader during the Holocaust, and he used propaganda to instill hatred against the Jews.
28. The Night Of Broken Glass- Nov. 9-10, 1938 when all Jewish businesses and homes were destroyed. Synagogues were burned, and Jews were beaten or killed.

31. Juden rat- the Jewish council members chosen by the Nazis to run the ghettos. They were given the task to choose who would go to the camps or who would be given food. In many cases, they played a role in who would live and who would die. Many hated this role and committed suicide.
