Cisco - Network Operating Systems

Week Beginning June 2 (Monday)

Senior Final Exams... for all students, including underclassmen.

Almost all of you are seniors, so we will take the Final together this week.

We'll review the Cisco Final Exam for NOS before we take it.

I activated the Module 14 exam over the weekend. Hope everybody took it???

Please come in Period 5 or 7... or after school to take it if you missed it.
Also... make sure you tell me ahead of time when you are coming.

All lab assignments should have been turned in for full credit! Please get
them in this week to avoid "zero" grades!

______________________________________________________
Week Beginning May 27 (Tuesday)

This week we'll finish up the last NOS Module, number 14. Friday, I stored the
Focus Questions on the Handouts section of this site: for the folks who want
to get an early start on reading and research.

Tuesday I'll give out the Focus Questions for those who were otherwise busy
over the long weekend.

The Module 14 assessment will be activated Thursday, Friday and next weekend.

Next week (June 2 to June 6) we'll do prep work for (and then take) the NOS
Final Assessment. We'll go over the questions and answers before taking this test.

Be very focused on getting your labs complete. It's amazing how this part of
your grade (20%) can affect the overall grade outcome!

Week Beginning May 19

This week we'll finish up the testing on Module 12, then go on to Module 13.

We also have a new lab: activities to give you experience with using Linux...
creating users and passwords, and using the vi editor to change files. I've
found these labs to be very valuable. Changing the way the computer works by
actually editing the files you've been reading about is... way cool!

Module 13 focus questions will be given out on Monday this week.

Assessment for Module 13 will take place Friday in class.

Module 11," which will be the assessment questions on Friday. (Give out
handout Monday). Handout is also in the "Handouts" area of this site.

2.Students will daily read online module 11, "cisco.netacad.net"

3.Students will write answers to the handout (#1 above) so they may do well on
Friday's assessment using any notes they need.

4.Students will turn in the "hands-on" activity lab I gave them last week.
They may submit these lab activities any time during the week.

5.Students will take the Module 11 assessment (online) Thursday or Friday.

and/or Friday. I will activate this test to be open during these times.

Week Beginning April 28

This week we will be focusing on the user's view of Linux... Chapter 10.

I'll give you a "Focused Question" handout Monday... 23 questions you can
answer as you do the online reading. If you misplace it, see the Handouts icon
on my main page.

Both test takes should be completed Thursday and/or Friday... no exceptions.
This means you will wish to use your class time wisely, dividing the module
into daily pieces for reading.

As far as Labs go, you can do these at home. Count on a few hands-on
activities using "Live CD - Knoppix." I'll have them ready for you by Tuesday
or Wednesday and give you seven days to get them completed. This time I
believe you should have no trouble doing the activities, because they don't
involve heavy-duty configuration changes.

Week Beginning April 14

This week we'll work to entirely complete Module 9! PowerPoint slides on
Monday and Tuesday. Reading and research to be done daily in class!

break.

Week Beginning April 7

Module 7 assessment will be on Monday (Retakes on Tuesday).

Module 8 Assessment will be available on Friday, April 11. If you wish to
postpone Module 8 to next Monday (April 14), you'll have to score 80 or above
on Monday for a chance to take it a second time.

Module 8 Focus Questions will be handed out on Tuesday this week.

We'll have a chance to take a look at Module 8 PowerPoint slides during this week.

There is no lab for Module 8, but Module 7 lab is due on WEDNESDAY.

_________________________________________________
Week Beginning March 31

This week we will have opportunity to re-take Module 7 assessment. If you did
not take it Friday, you will be required to earn at least 80 point on
Monday... in order to get the chance to re-take for 100.

On Monday I'll give you the assessment focus questions for Module_8. This
module is all about administrating a Windows 2000 NOS. It will seem more
familiar to you that dealing with Linux NOS... but there is lots to it
nevertheless.

Please read Chapter 8 this week, spending 20 minutes minimum outside class, as
well as using your in-class time wisely. This is heady stuff, and hat's off to
you if you can expose yourself to the concepts with self-discipline and focus.

I will give you a Windows/Linux hands-on Lab this week. You should attempt to
do this lab in class or at home with your Linux Live CD or with your installed
Windows XP. The Windows portion is geared to Windows 2000, but much of it you
can adapt using WinXP. The idea is to note what you can and cannot do using
the tools you have.

Technology changes, and very little runs without glitches in the real world!
______________________________________________________
Week Beginning March 24

Your focused test questions for Friday's (March 28) Module 7 quiz will be
given on Monday, March 24. Copies are posted in the "Handouts" section of our
web site... should you lose your copy :(

Monday, March 24 is the changed due date for the Module 6 lab paper given at
the beginning of last week.

Monday will also be a test-retake for Module 6. (Period 6 folks can take it
twice on Monday, due to the blackout on Friday!)

Due to the short week (Wednesday we are involved in school-wide activities),
we have no labs to do at home this week!

It will be important to use class time to read your online curriculum in
Module 7... and see the half-hour instructor overview slides. You should work
on your reading material at home for 20 minutes each evening and catch the
answers to the test questions while you read.
____________________________________________________
Week Beginning March 17

Module 5 retakes will be available in class on Monday.

Please use class time to read the online material for Module 6. You might
still have to do a bit at home, but far less if you use class time effectively.

Module 6 Focus Questions to be given out Monday in class.

Module 6 Research Lab (Monday handout)... due Friday.

Let's make it OUR GOAL to achieve 80 or greater for the "first take" of our
Module 6 assessment on Friday!

Week Beginning March 10

This week will be a focus on Module 5.

We will:

home during the week or next weekend. This will not be due until Monday, March 17.
_______________________________________________________
Week Beginning March 3

Module 4 quiz is scheduled for Thursday this week!

Special handouts to be given on Monday that you should read, starting in
class, then finishing at home. These handouts present a different style of
teaching about subnets. Because of this set of reading handouts, I will not be
giving you special lab sheets to do for Module 4. Reading the subnet handouts
will be important for you.

Tuesday you will get the "Focus Questions" for Thursday's quiz.

____________________________________________________
Week Beginning February 11

Module 3 reading should be finished by the weekend (Feb 16).

____________________________________________________
Week beginning February 4

Module 1 assessment on Tuesday... with a quick review of the important ideas
on Monday (PowerPoint slides)

Monday I will also review any Cisco test questions I think are bizarre or
unreasonable.

Monday I will also give you an easy home lab/research handout that will be due
on Friday.

READ Module two before next Monday!

NOTE- We are doing most of our reading of the online material in class, so any
homework will be Labs or research only and take up only an hour of your time
per week outside class. This means that any time you have in class should be
spent READING the material. We have FOURTEEN modules to get through before
June 1. Gotta keep on schedule...
__________________________________________________
Week Beginning January 28

Tuesday and Wednesday evenings:

Fill out the form for your home computer resources. This will be given on
Tuesday. Boot the startup CD for Linux Knoppix on your home computer. Check it
out the GUI and activate the CLI console.

Make a good start on reading and notes for Chapter 1. Figure out how and when
you can divide each chapter into a week's time for reading. To save you time
at home reading the online material, we will use class time for reading and
note taking, and allocate home time for experimenting and lab work.

Notes to be taken on basic ideas. If some information is too detailed, I will
let you know ahead of time.

Anticipate Module 1 Cisco test on Monday, Feb 4.
