What will my child need to take with him/her when going to school each day?

Most days there will be something that will be sent home with
your child-
notes from the office, newsletters, daily work, community
program fliers,
etc. so it is important that your child have his backpack with
him every
day. I think that having a folder in which you child can put
these notes is
very helpful. The notes seem to get to you in a little more
readable
condition. The folder is also used to send notes, money, and
papers back to
school.

What supplies does my child need for school?

Your child will need such things as a bagpack, crayons, markers,
pencils,
glue, colored pencils, a large eraser, a box of kleenex, and
other things
that may be indicated on the letter from our school. It is
helpful if
his/her name is written on each of the items with a permanent
marker.

Will the children have someplace to store their things?

They will have a small cubby that is approximately 4 inches by 4
inches and
about 12 inches deep. We call this their mailbox. I put notes
from the
office or newsletters from myself in their mailbox which they
will clean out
each day after arriving at school. The mailbox will also hold
small projects
or pictures which they may want to work on throughout the week.
I will have
a plastic pencil box for each child to use to hold his crayons,
pencil,
markers, eraser, etc. If the items will not fit in the pencil
box, he can
choose to leave some things in his backpack (particularly the
items not used
on a daily basis).

If I need to drive my child to school, what time should I be there?

The instructional day begins at 8:20, so arriving at school by
8:10 is recommended so that your child can have things hung up
and organized for the day.

What should I do if I need to pick my child up from school?

Send a note with your child indicating that you will be picking
him/her up,
so that we do not put him on the bus; or call the school by
3:00. The office can then let me know that you are coming.
Dont rely on being able to get to school before the bus pulls
out.

Does my child need to eat breakfast at school?

No, the children have learning activities set out for them to
use during this
time. It's sort of an extra free exploration time for those not
eating. Your
child may also choose to bring his own nutritious snack to eat
during this
time.

Will the children be having a snack break later in the day?

Since this is the first year that we will have all day
kindergarten, we will have to see what part of the day we put
our snack into. My guess would be that we will have either a mid-
morning snack or a mid-afternoon one, but not both.

If my child eats at school, do I send money each day or for the entire week?

If your child will be eating every day of the week, it is
helpful to send
the entire amount for the week. If you child is eating just a
day or two it
might be easier to send the money on the day that he/she will be
eating. Please be sure to put your child's name on the envelope
with the money, plus indicate that the money is for meals.

May I send a birthday treat to celebrate my child's birthday?

Yes. All birthday and party treats must come from either a
bakery or
purchased from a store. They cannot be homemade treats.

If I need to contact you, when should I call?

I am available to come to the phone from about 7:45-8:10 and
from 11:30-
12:15. Any time during the school day you can also leave a
message with the
secretary as to a good time to contact you and your phone number.

May I email you at school?

Yes, my email address is freyc@pennfield.net or you can just
click on
the icon on my homepage to send me an email. In the subject line
put your child's name so that I will recognize that it is from
one of our parents. When you first write, the mail goes into the
junk mail as our mailing system does not allow unknown mail into
our inbox. With your child's name in the subject line, I will
more likely be able to pick it out and ask that it be sent to my
inbox.

What does my child need for outside playtime during the colder weather?

Each day the things needed for outside play are posted in the
hallway. As it
gets colder, I suggest that your child always bring all of the
possible
things that are needed-coat, hat, mittens, boots, snowpants. If
boots or
snowpants are needed to play on the playground and your child
does not have
them that day, he will be asked to stay on the blacktop to play
rather get
his shoes or clothing wet or muddy by playing on the playground.
This also
helps in not tracking a lot of dirt or mud into our classroom.

Will the children have a rest time in the afternoon?

Yes, especially at the beginning of the year. We have asked that
each child bring a beach towel in a plastic bag with his/her name
on it on which to rest during our quiet time.
