Parent Class Update Letters

Dear Parents,

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with your child this year. I am excited about the new school year. My goal is to challenge every child in the classroom at his /her level. In order to accomplish this goal, I have many unique units of study planned for the class.

I feel strongly that students need the time after school to relax and just be children. My policy for homework is that students should never work more than one hour a day on homework. This should include the twenty minutes a day required reading for the monthly reading calendar. Students will be given the time to work in class on all assigned work. Any unfinished work is to be completed at home. If you notice that your child is spending extra time on homework please contact me so that we can help him/her to work more efficiently.

I have given all the students my phone numbers as well as my e-mail address. If your child has a question about any assignment please allow him/her to contact me at any time. I can usually clear up any confusion about homework quickly. Having that contact also helps me to be aware of any extra help that students need on a particular assignment. You can also check my web site each day if you aren’t certain about an assignment.

Most daily practice work will be graded on a three point scale:

3=work is complete and on time

2=work is late

1=work is incomplete

0=assignment has not been turned in

Long term assignments, tests, quizzes, and more in depth assignments will be graded according to the point value of the assignment.

I will be sending letters home as the year progresses in order to keep you informed about what is happening in the classroom. Communication between the home and school is extremely important. I look forward to working with you as we progress through the year in order make this a successful school year for your child.

Thank you,

Trish Werth

Dear Parents,

            We ended two of our major units of study last week. Both the science and social studies units will be ending. Our final assessment in science was, living  biomes. The students worked in groups to create presentations for the first grade classes. They dressed as the focus animal in their biomes and presented, to the younger students, the important information from their written reports. They  became the focus animal from their biomes. The students wore costumes and made props for their presentations.

            Our final assessment for the Backpack USA geography unit was also last week. Students had to label the states and capitals on a scrambled USA map. They then had to cut out all the pieces and create a map of the United States with all the borders and major bodies of water labeled. This map was created with frosting on a cake. The nice part about this test is that the students got to eat it when they were finished.

Thank you,
