Menagerie Article... READING Mrs. Robbins Sixth grade is off to a fantastic start. All students seem to have adjusted well to their new schedule. We are working on our first book projects; movie posters, characters shoes and diaries. We are also doing MEAP review, getting ready for the MEAP October 13th through the 29th. Next we will be learning about Reading Strategies for fiction reading: predicting, visualizing, connecting, questioning, clarifying and evaluating. In our first unit we will be reading stories about characters that learn about tests of courage, both the courage to be themselves and courage in action. A famous American writer, Eudora Welty once said “All serious daring starts from within.” COMPUTERS Mrs. Robbins Students are learning their way around a computer, how to create folders, save and retrieve files and about the history of computers. Next we will be beginning their Microsoft Word tutorials and Basic Computes Skills books. Students will be learning how to evaluate websites, type their English papers in computer class, as well as several integrated projects in Math, Social Studies, Science, Reading and Language Arts. A great site for sixth graders is: www.mathcats.com/explore/tessellations/ tesspeople.html WORDS OF THE YEAR...to know, learn and with which to live! Integrity Respect Responsibilty Compassion COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY Parents and teachers need to make the time to communicate with and support each other, if not the children are the ones who will lose. Not the parents, not the teachers - the children. I'll take a leap and say that on behalf of those of you who choose to have children and those of us who choose to educate them, that's the last thing anyone wants.
