Reading CAFE

    Reading CAFE 
Reading CAFE is a reading and writing program that helps students become better readers.  Strategies are taught that focus on:
C=comprehension
A=accuracy
F=fluency
E=extended vocabulary
Each day in third grade students will come to the CAFE area and learn new strategies or practice others.  The CAFE is a part of our DAILY 3.
The Daily 3 includes: Read to Self, Read to Someone, and Work Work/Writing.


READ TO SELF 

Read to Self is the first part of the DAILY 3 that the third graders learned.  Read to Self is a stamina builder for readers.  During Read to Self time, readers must:  find a spot to read that is not too close to another reader, read quietly, read the whole time, stay in their spot, and record anything they complete.  The first two weeks of school Read to Self was introduced and practiced.  We are up to reading to self for 15 minutes.  Ask your child what they've been reading.        

     READ TO SOMEONE 

Read to Someone is a part of our DAILY 3.  The Daily 3 includes:  Read to Self, Read to Someone, and Word Work/Writing.  The third week of school, Read to Someone was introduced.  This week, week 4, Sept. 28-Oct. 3, we are practicing Read to Someone.  The idea behind Read to Someone is to build reading fluency and comprehension.  The top picture on this page shows Isabelle and Avery sitting EEKK.  EEKK is a Read to Someone must!  Other musts include:  use quiet voices, read the whole time, check for understanding, both students stay focused and students may read the same book, or read different books.  Students have created comprehension checkmarks to help them check for understanding during this reading time.

        1.  I choose a book.

         3.  Interest--Does it interest me?
         4.  Comprehend--Am I understanding what I

         5.  Know---I know most of the words. 


     On  the first day of school we learned how to choose a GOOD FIT BOOK.  Our first lesson compared picking a book to choosing the right shoe, in the right size, for an activity.  The students then made their first book choices for their READING FOLDERS.  Our first unit theme is FRIENDSHIP, and our first reading genre is a NARRITIVE.  The students needed to pick at least two friendship narratives to keep in their reading folders.  Other choices included:  poetry, informational reading, leveled books, AR's, and personal favorites.  Students will use these book choices during our "Daily Literacy Periods."
 
     The week of Oct. 5th students worked on a "rap" representing the I-PICK idea.  I will try to video this ASAP and insert it on this page.
