Language Arts. Dec.

activities.

During the month of December we will continue to study Native American 
literature.  One group of 
students is reading the chapter book, GUESTS, by Michael Dorris.  The reading 
assignments are:

     Dec. 7-ch. 6 and Dec. 9-ch. 7  continued vocab. work and sociogram work
     Nov. 30-Dec. 7--chapters 4,5, and 6   Ch. 4 by Wed. Dec. 2, Ch 5 by Fri. 
Dec. 4 and Ch6 by
                                     Mon. Dec. 7  Students in this group will 
be keeping personal vocabulary lists for
                                    each chapter.  They will also be creating 
Sociograms to show character relationships
Other students are reading various Native American legends.  
The week of Dec. 7th the legend group will be reading legends with a Mich. 
theme such as:  Legend of the Sleeping Bear, Legend of Michigan, Legend of 
the Lady Slipper, Legend of Mackinac Island etc...
The week of Nov. 30-Dec. 4th these 
students will be reading DREAM WOLF.  We will be using a grade 3 basal 
reading book for this legend.  
Students in this group will be looking at the genre of legend, legend 
characteristics, working on fluency 
and comprehension questions for the week.

Welcome to the Language Arts page for November.  We spent the first months of 
school getting to know the "DAILY 3" and the "Reading CAFE"  Most days your 
child will take part in the DAILY 3:
                         Read to Self
                         Read to Someone
                         Writing/Word Work

During the month of November students will learn about the genre of Native 
American Legends.  The students will learn that legends are narratives that 
are related to a particular culture.  They have the characteristics of:
     honorable character, brave deed, exaggeration, settting, and tell/explian
     how something came to be.
