Spelling

I have noticed that many of the students are not carrying over what they learning in structured language and spelling into their writing in other areas.  I have explained to the students that this is something they must work on. Spelling and structured language is not just for the weekly test but for all their academic subjects.  Please reinforce this practice at home as well.

Weekly spelling tests are on Thursdays. Spelling tests are sentence
dictation. I read a sentence to the class which has one or more of the
spelling words in it. I repeat the sentence 5 or 6 times slowly so every
student has a chance to copy it on their paper. I do not grade the
sentence--only the spelling word(s). By using sentence dictation,
the children not only learn their spelling words but they also learn how
to sound out and spell other words and practice sight (red) words as
well. Students who get 4 or more wrong on the Thursday test may retake
the test on Friday. The student receives the better of the two grades.

Test scores are only part of the Spelling grade. I also look at how much
a student's spelling improves in all subjects.
