First grade : November 30 December already! It’s going to be a busy month. We’ll be learning all about Advent and spending time daily lighting our wreath and saying prayers. We’re also starting a unit on magnets and geometry. Students need to know shapes, (square, rectangle) solids, (sphere, cube), and fractions (1/2, 1/4). My students always love these units! *** We do not have a first grade mass on December 17- it’s been moved to January. *** My oldest daughter Kelsie is having surgery in December and I will be out of the classroom from Dec. 14 –18. During that time Barb Adams will substitute. Please keep Kelsie and our family in your prayers. If all goes well I will return on the 21st. Our classroom party will be Tuesday, December 22. It’s going to be a sledding party. Students do not exchange gifts in first grade. Homework: Our spelling rule is short u. cub hug bug cut gum cup luck fun run red word: Monday: study for spelling, read math story. Tuesday: library today. Look for a bag of books to come home! Have your child complete the enclosed addition math fact sheet. Time them for two minutes. We are working on math fluency. Draw a square around the last problem completed in two minutes- then have your child complete the entire page. Wednesday: We visit the Secret Santa shop today!!!! Send in your envelope if your child is shopping. It’s always nice to indicate whether your child can shop for him/herself. Thursday: mass today- Friday: return folder. St. Nicholas Day is Sunday, Dec. 6. We’ll be putting out our shoes for him to fill! Mrs. Marlowe Homework folders: Homework folders are sent home on Monday. Each day of the week has a recommended lesson. The beauty of homework folders is that as long as the work is done during the week, it doesn't really matter what day you do it! For example, if Monday says to complete a math page, but you have hockey practice, complete the page on Tuesday instead. Be careful to look for occasional items that are due by a certain time of the week though. Another benefit of homework folders is that parents can modify the assignment by making it more challenging. First I suggest you talk to me, then we can discuss ways to make homework more beneficial to your child. Homework folders are due on Friday, but can be returned sooner if all work is completed. Friday folders: Friday folders come home every Friday and contain corrected work and papers from the office. They are to be returned empty on Monday. Please look over each paper to be sure it's actually your child's paper, whether corrections need to be made, and to become familiar with our curriculum.
