Home and School Minutes
May 17, 2009 at 6:30 p.m.
1. Call to Order: 6:35
2. Attendance:

3. School Board Report:
- Jackie Wright said that 6 of the 16 high school students who received an Excellence in Education award were from Father Marquette.
4. Treasurers Report:
- Karen Thompson (Treasurer)
- Not present to give a report. Kathy Frazier said that she is following up on balancing the Home and School account with the general fund.
- Kathy Frazier (Student Accounts)
- The student accounts account has $17,277.00 with $14,029.00 belonging to student accounts. $2,536 is going to be transferred to the general fund leaving $712.00.
- In the fall she will be sending home a statement with an explanation of why we have the accounts and how the money can be used.
5. Fundraisers:
- Egg Sale
- Holly Boburka and Chris Flynn chaired this year and will chair it again next year.
- Some were returned by families because they were broken so next year they will purchase extras. The extras can be sold easily if not needed for exchanges.
- Spring Book Fair
- It went well.
- Cheri Bannan will help again next year.
- It was noticed that there was too much cash in the box at times. Extra will be removed next year as needed.
- Fall Sale
- The demo materials will be given to Tania to examine.
- Kathy Weber will check with Tania about dates and vendors.
- Holly Boburka will run the magazine portion of the sale.
- Auction
- It will be held at St. Michael’s in the gathering space and Zyrd Room.
- Cheryl Turausky and Kelly L’Huillier are working on publicity. Having items on website was useful. Free TV6 and radio adds could be useful.
- Tia and Jon Arntsen offered their help via e-mail for next year. They will They arrived in the mid to late afternoon and made sure the numbers on the item slips match-up with the wipe board, and made sure that everything had a number and was listed on the auction list. They also sold last minute tickets and checked out people at the end of the night.
- Kohls was a big help. They should be contacted again to see if they still run their volunteer/grant program.
- Starbucks should also be contacted they have a similar program to Kohl’s.
- NMU’s Culinary School should be contacted to see if students can do the serving/catering. Maybe Scrip for Econo and GFS could be donated by parents/others for the cost of the food.
- Monthly auction planning meetings would be useful to keep up on progress.
- It would be good to get a committee together for “asking.” There is a list of items auctioned last year which can be used as a starting point for asking.
- Melissa Pillifant will forward this information to Tamara Leadbetter who is chair.
6. H&S Sponsored Events:
- Teacher Appreciation Luncheon
- It will not be held this year. In its place gift tote bags (women) and gift certificates (men) have been purchased.
- It will be held again next year.
- Kathy is trying to find out who signed-up for that on the volunteer list.
- The mulch will be dropped of on August 31.
- Mrs. Allie and Mrs. Clement will be asked to find one or two parents to chair this.
- Tia Arntsen will coordinate, but needs to leave to drop her daughter off for class.
7. Grant Requests/Updates:
· Holly Boburka—paper products
o Holly wanted money for paper products for a going away party given for school families moving.
o Kathy Weber said that she could use Home and School paper products in a bin downstairs.
o Michele Boehmer will get the information to Holly.
· Michele Boehmer—recycling bin
o Michele wanted money for recycling bins for her Girl Scout troop to set ou in the school.
o Jackie Wright said that the school has on that they could use and set-up by the pop machine in the lunch room.
· Jackie Wright asked for an additional $100.00 for hot dog buns to be used at the whole school picnic. They need to buy more food because this year both the elementary and middle school will participate together. Passed.
· Jackie Wright asked for $525.00 to be used for tree removal and trimming. Antler’s tree service gave a good price as the usual cost would be $800.00 for the work. It is a safety issue that was brought up by a parent. Passed. It was requested that Jackie Check with another school family who may do tree removal to see if they wanted to bid.
· Jackie made a request for Cathy Clement for $200.00 for incentives for a summer reading program. Passed.
8. Old Business:
· Spotlight on 3rd Source funding
o These have been going well in the newsletters.
· Volunteer Forms
o Cheryl Turausky will organize the volunteer form and e-mail them to the secretaries.
9. New Business:
· Summer flowers
o Renee Leow has the flowers.
o There is a possible work crew available to help with the front gardens—Renee Leow will take care the application if they become available.
· Track uniforms
o They are in bad shape. Kathy Weber is looking into this with the athletic director.
· Officer elections
o Melissa will send home a ballot for open positions.
o Kathy Weber is done as chair.
o Melissa will also put secretary o the ballot, but is willing to stay on as secretary if no one is found to take over.
· It was suggested that the eighth graders bag groceries at Econo as a fundraiser for their trip.
· Jackie Wright has asked Home and School to help pair new families with mentor families.
· Jackie let us know that there will be a math camp for grades 1-6 the week after VBS from 10:30-noon with certified teachers.

After the meeting at grant for Mr. Vanwelsenaers was approved for $200.00 to help purchase an Elmo projector.
