Spelling tests are given on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Our spelling tests will cover the first 200 high frequency words that students need to know for reading and writing. The Wednesday spelling test is fill-in the blank (cloze test) to complete the story. The Skills Test portion is an application quiz related to our weekly spelling homework. The test on Thursday has three to four dictated sentences that may cover any of the spelling words that have been introduce up to that date. Students need to be good listeners for this test. Challenge words are extra words for the students who can use the extra "challenge." Misspelling challenge words do not count against the students' spelling scores.Back to Top
Why are the same words attached to my child's spelling test every week?
The spelling program we are using is called; Rebecca Sitton Spelling. This spelling program emphasizes the learning of the high frequency words. These words are the words that we encounter the most in our reading and writing. The spelling program has a lot of review and practice of the words built in to it. Not every word, however, that your child has misspelled is on the next test. The misspelled words will show up again.Back to Top
Where can I find my child's new spelling words?
The weekly spelling words are on my newsletter (hard copy and Spelling Webpage). Most words are review and the last five on the Spelling Webpage are the new words for the week.Back to Top
Can my child bring a snack to class?
Absolutely. I allow students to bring a nutritious snack for the afternoon. Please make these small snacks. Finger food is the easiest since students may be working on an assignment or reading while they are eating. Students can also bring in a water bottle. They can drink water throughout the class day.I would prefer to limit it to water (not flavored water, sports drinks, or juice boxes) because of the new carpeting and the potential hazard to school books.Back to Top
Can my child celebrate his/her birthday at school?
Sure, but we try to keep it simple to a late afternoon treat (cookies or cupcakes) to share with the class. Juice and milk are not necessary. Summer birthdays are celebrated in May. Currently, we have 25 students in class.Back to Top
Occasionally I will send home Scholastic Book Order forms. Please do not feel pressure to order books. It is completely optional. I usually send the order forms home with the Friday Folders, and if you decide to order books, the money is due the following Friday. If you choose to order books, please make the check out to Scholastic Books. I have set up a way for parents to order books from Scholastic books online for your children and our class. Every time parents order booksfor their child online from my class book club, we receive a free book for our class. I have the steps to order books from Scholastic linked below as another FAQ. Kellogg Elementary will have at least two Book Fairs during the year during Fall and Spring conferences.Back to Top
Are there any field trips in second grade?
In the past, we have visited Charlton Park in the fall. These field trips have been supported by Kellogg's PTO. I am hoping to have a walking field trip in the Spring to the Kellogg Bird Sanctary. That trip will cost one dollar.Back to Top
What is the classroom behavior program in your class?
The behavior plan in my second grade class recognizes the students who do a great job day in and day out while it supports the students who need help with behavior within our classroom community. It is a visual program so studentsare able to see how they are doing throughout the day and make adjustmentswhen needed. The behavior plan in my class uses a card system with green, yellow, red, and white cards. Green = Great behavior - receives a daily sticker Yellow = 1 warning - lost 10 minutes of recess Red = 2 warnings - lost 10 minutes of recess/writes Action Plan White = 3 warnings - lost 10 minutes of recess/writes Action Plan/phone call home Twenty (20) daily stickers = trip to treasure box, cut pass, lunch in the classroom, or treat jar I think this behavior plan supports learning in our classroom and helps prepare my students for third grade. I want to make sure that my students understand the expectations within my class. I also want parents to be informed about their children in class. I believe this program accomplishes both of these goals. We also utilize the overall Kellogg behavior program with "Ahoy" slips for good behavior, lunch with the principal, and minor/major behavior slips when behavior needs to be improved. Very often with "Action Plans", major and minor slips, parents are asked to sign the papers and have their child return the papers to school so we know that parents are aware of classroom and school behavior. As always, if you have any questions about the behavior programs and your child, please contact us at school.Back to Top
